The GGD Visual Novels Thread

I thought since there seems to be very little visual novel spotlight here on GGD, I thought I'd make a spotlight of it.

Anyways, for those of you wondering what a visual novel is...

In simplest terms, it's a novel... but visual.

Seriously. At least, it's a novel with still pictures added. Though the medium has grown to usually be very large and encompassing. Many have video, narration, voice acting, many things you can think of. Some crossover with Eroge, though many do not.

Some examples of visual novels (that I've also played and highly suggest) are the following:

DRAMATICAL MURDER (often abbreviated, acronymed to DMMD)

DRAMATICAL MURDER: ReConnect (though it should just be called follow up stories with kinky sex)

9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors

Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Dangan Ronpa

Here's a list, that probably doesn't even cover everything.

And here's the VNDB. The visual novel database, which probably covers everything.

A sad thing about visual novels is that, while they can be bought, many are never officially translated (unless they turn into popular games). Many I have are fan translations and not fully complete.

So, let's talk about visual novels. Which ones we love, which we don't, and how we can never, never, never, erase those bad endings from our heads. I'm currently playing sweet pool, which I'm sure will turn into the biggest mistake of my life.

Actually, they do. I've never played them though. I think they'd be like Hotel Dusk: Room 215. There is enough gameplay to give you doubt it's a VN.

I loved DMMD. I thinking about replaying it, honestly. Because I don't remember there being plot holes for the new MIzuki storyline to clear up in Re:code.

Clear is my favorite, obviously.

I read something called like Eternal (or Everlasting) Summer and I didn't even get the point of it, maybe I'm just sooo bad at playing visual novels

Did you play it until you got all the endings? I don't know any visual novel to have only one ending. (and it's Everlasting.)

Usually, if you play all of the paths, everything and all the plot holes are usually cleared up. And true end is usually this thing of complete monster badassery. Though, looking at it's TVTropes page, it doesn't interest me.

Were you playing a version with all of the "adult" content removed?

No, I didn't, I had two endings with one of them being a complete mess to me. And I gave up on it

Well, like I said it didn't interest me. it seems weird like visual novels but it doesn't sound all that good. May have go find unbiased reviews.

I suggest less weird stuff. Though that's hard to find. I suggest Hotel Dusk Room 215.

i suggest 999 and Dangan Ronpa if you're prepared for weird (though it's not as weird as everlasting summer).

I think you had a weird experience with Everlasting Summer because it seems like there may not be much of a story to actually discover and seems focused on the relationships. While that is expected, usually games have a good balance or head one way or another. from what I'm reading on TVTropes, it sounds weird, floating between story and p0rn.

I suggest you go through the list on TVTropes I put in the link above and see if you can find anything you like. I really don't want anyone to be put off by on weird visual novel experience.
