ARTPOP was really THAT bad?

Whilst I agree, reputation is pretty important, it's also not hard to override it.

I mean take Justin Bieber for example, everyone except for beliebers thought he was a massive asshole... He puts out some good music and everyone likes it. Now, he's still a massive asshole but he is doing very well now. His reviews aren't hailing him the new king of pop, they're mixed from average to good which is reflective of the music. The album is quite samey, it's pretty average but it's got some good songs on there.

Yes, reputation is important.  So is preconceived notions of the music before listening to the music.  If a person reads negative things and sees poor sales, that can effect a person's opinion when they first hear it.  If you expect something to be bad, you are more likely to feel it is bad when you hear it.  I think this holds true in some cases.

I went to this, and stayed there from morning till close one day.

The music played from the album NON STOP throughout the gallery, ALL DAY LONG. People were dancing, playing, singing. laughing, taking pictures... it was unreal. There was nothing wrong with that album, there wasn't a person there, with the possible exception of an excop security guard -- who wasn't movin' and groovin'.

The official event photographer for the promotion sent me some HD images from the gallery that were taken when we walked in... Guess who the tan jacket is?

Yes, some people won't listen to an album that isn't selling because they think it must not be good.

Exactly what I'm saying. People decided they wouldn't *LISTEN* to ARTPOP after they had heard or read that it wasn't selling. Nobody decided they didn't *LIKE* ARTPOP until they actually heard it for themselves. They are two mutually exclusive cohorts of people, with (sadly) most Gaga fans belonging to the former. Most people who purport to not like ARTPOP have not even given it a proper listen.

I agree that it's true, but people were exposed to the best songs on the album (Applause, Venus and Do What U Want) and that was before the album was even released. It just didn't strike a chord with the same amount of people as before.

Also, some of the best critically acclaimed albums didn't sell tonnes.

The issue with ARTPOP, I believe, is it just didn't stand up to par with her previous work and the songs being released around it. Take Applause vs Roar for example. Applause's instrumental and chorus is brilliant but the verses are awkward in comparison to something like Roar. Now, I personally prefer Applause because I like dance / pop in general but Roar to me, is the better song in terms of craft and execution.

The album wasn't going to shift huge numbers, there wasn't enough substance to shift to people but that's just how it kind of is. It's an above average pop album in my opinion but when you compare it to The Fame, which is a perfect time capsule of the time, The Fame Monster which was forward thinking in production, Born This Way which was a huge theatrical piece... ARTPOP is left in this awkward zone where it's not really anything. It sounds like a compilation or a mixtape of fun songs Gaga made, which it pretty much is. Gaga said herself, it's an album she made to have fun to with her friends and I think it achieves that goal. It's just not a strong enough of an album to blow people away or capture people, it's just a bit of fun.

Our opinions and tastes are quite different.  Your best three songs on the album are different than mine, and there is no agreement on this forum about which are the best songs.  Imo, Applause is way better than Roar.  I think there was plenty of substance in ARTPOP, but it was released at a time when it was considered cool to dislike Gaga.  In a different environment, it would have done much better, imo.  We just have different points of view.

It's her best album. The era was a mess, but we don't talk about that.

Not when Self Titled was released :crossed:

Anyways, it isn't bad, just a little disappointing given what could have been of the album. Not that that's her fault, but at the end of the day it is what it is. Still a fun album to listen to occasionally, brings back good artRAVE memories :nick:
