But you do realize that business is not solely based on the quality of the content. Success is usually based on the success of the marketing (The four P's of marketing). Yes, quality counts. But the management and promotion could have been MUCH better and it would have increased sales incredibly. On pop forums, we only see the quality aspect of the album rather than the whole picture of the business.

Do you think if ARTPOP outsold BTW, we would be seeing threads saying "Is ARTPOP overrated?" I doubt it.

And yes, you can have your opinion of the album. But you'd be surprised what amazing marketing can do for crappy content (no tea, no shade to you know who)

It's true, marketing has a huge impact on the sells but sells don't have a huge impact on opinion, that was my point. It's like stanning for this album gives people a sense of entitlement, like hipsters that pretend they like what's not popular when it's really just meh.

I think we would see loads of threads saying ARTPOP is overrated. It doesn't deserve more success than the previous albums at all.

I guess we will never know. And if some people think it's her greatest album, then they do. Literally all of my friends (at parties or if I'm driving) ask me to play ARTPOP. Even when we are just sitting around and talking about life.

I think the GP wants it, they just don't know that they do because the marketing wasn't there. And so they listened to the blogs/reviewers/media (who arguably were attacking her/the album for no apparent reason) and never picked it up or cared to listen.

Absolutely agree with this.

If anything, ARTPOP is a sad example of how easily influenced the masses are by the media and marketing when it comes to the enjoyment/consumption of commercial art. Which, in itself, is sort of the point of the project, isn't it? So it's really not so bad after all, I guess. :)

I agree with trying to inspire creativity but the track choices for the album doesn't really make it so. :wtf:

I've noticed how the only people still bringing up ARTPOP are those who don't get it. Why is that?

Sales did have a huge impact on opinion with ARTPOP.  On this forum when ARTPOP was released the praise was huge, with people saying there are no fillers, every track is singles-worthy, etc.  Then when sales dropped people started dragging Gaga like she is to blame for everything and people started to find fault with the music.  Her fans started to believe what they read in the media rather than judge the music themselves.  The sad fact is, many people just want to brag to their friends about Gaga's sales, charts, and awards.  When that doesn't happen people turn on her, the music must be bad.

Is that what they said though? They said they didn't like the album because of the sells? So many of you say it yet I don't think I've seen a single fan say they don't like ARTPOP because it didn't perform as well as they expected. I've seen stans for other artists drag it because of the sells, but not a Gaga fan.

I liked the album more when it debuted but it got old for me very quickly, it sounded like a pretty standard pop album that should have came out in 2012. The sells didn't make that opinion for me and I know many here also share the same opinion.

No. They said they didn't LISTEN to the album because of the sales, not they didn't LIKE the album because of sales.

There are plenty of people like you that dislike ARTPOP or some of the tracks because of their tastes and what kinds of things they personally look for in a song.  It's all a matter of each person's tastes.  But many are swayed by the opinions of others and by things external to the music.

I know quite a few people who liked Do What U Want and Venus when they heard it but nothing more than your standard decent pop song. My friend who stanned hard for Gaga didn't like ARTPOP at all and a few other people I know in real life who liked Gaga said that they didn't like ARTPOP because it sounds boring :air:

I personally think if the music was upto her usual standard, the reviews would have been far more favourable. ARTPOP has some gems but there's far too many stumbles on it to really shine.

I'm addressing the latter as that is what everyone is saying in this thread.

Whilst I agree, reputation is pretty important, it's also not hard to override it.

I mean take Justin Bieber for example, everyone except for beliebers thought he was a massive asshole... He puts out some good music and everyone likes it. Now, he's still a massive asshole but he is doing very well now. His reviews aren't hailing him the new king of pop, they're mixed from average to good which is reflective of the music. The album is quite samey, it's pretty average but it's got some good songs on there.

Yes, some people won't listen to an album that isn't selling because they think it must not be good.
