Of course the era isn't over. The album is still in the top 10-20 on the Billboard 200. The label will release singles as long as 1989 is stil selling this well.

But it is. It was already a promo single, it got a lot of press, a lot of performances (which is more than I can say for a couple of other singles ) and charted really high iirc. On top of being a track on a 9M (?) selling album. Yeah, it's a good song but everybody has it and listened to it. I'm not just saying it as a New Romantics stan, it makes no sense.
