(CNN) - After a teacher at a Virginia school handed out a standard homework assignment on Islam, such an angry backlash flooded in that it prompted officials to close every single school in the county as a safety precaution.

"While there has been no specific threat of harm to students, schools and school offices will be closed Friday, December 18, 2015," Augusta County Schools said. Extracurricular activities were shut down Thursday

The homework assignment aimed to give students "an idea of the artistic complexity of calligraphy."

"Here is the shahada, the Islamic statement of faith, written in Arabic. In the space below, try copying it by hand. This should give you an idea of the artistic complexity of calligraphy."

The illustrative classical Arabic phrase was the basic statement in Islam. It translated to: "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah."

When students took it home, it was like a spark hitting a powder keg. Some of their parents saw the homework as an attempt to convert their children to Islam.

The Child

Well both of the teachers and the parents are stupid, why would you give your students this exact sentence why not another one? Which has nothing to do with religion?

And lol at those people thinking that someone wanted to convert their kids.

The Arabic is so scary.

When you try to write or draw arabic calligraphy you magically become a muslim and maybe even a terrorist(?) and there is no going back.

So kids, don't try this at home.

There should be a separation of church and state in public schools, and Islam doesn't get an exception.

If my kid had to write "God is the one true god and Jesus is his son" for "educational purposes", I'd be outraged as well.

They knew full and well this would cause controversy.

That would never cause controversy in America.

Would it be a problem to write this?

Um it actually did and that's why we had several supreme court cases that have banned the implementation of prayer in public school (Engel v. Vitale)

And yes, that would also be a problem to have assigned in school since every since underlined word is "Allah"

Um...that's just Arabic. It's not calligraphy.

Shutting down the schools is overkill, but that teacher is stupid as **** for making them copy that phrase.

But that's part of the Bible in Arabic. Ignore what is underlined, pretend you don't see the red line, I'm talking about the text, if it would be written as calligraphy. The text from Christian holy book in Arabic shouldn't be a problem among Christian Americans. So why is it an issue?

Yeah I know. It can be made as calligraphy. It was just an example because most American Christians think that God and Allah mean two different things. That is probably where this outrage is coming from. Their kids are writing about "foreign god".
