Merkel is TIME's person of the year "Chancellor of the Free World"

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who ushered Europe through the continent's debt and migration crises, was named Time's Person of the Year on Wednesday.

Merkel, 61, who grew up in East Germany before the country was reunited, has led Germany since 2005. She was selected from eight Time finalists that included GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"Merkel had already emerged as the indispensable player in managing Europe’s serial debt crises; she also led the West’s response to Vladimir Putin’s creeping theft of Ukraine," Time editor Nancy Gibbs said in a statement. "But now the prospect of Greek bankruptcy threatened the very existence of the euro zone. The migrant and refugee crisis challenged the principle of open borders. And finally, the carnage in Paris revived the reflex to slam doors, build walls and trust no one.

"Each time Merkel stepped in."

Merkel has driven the European Union plan to offer aid and concessions to Turkey in exchange for stemming the flow of refugees, primarily from war-battered Syria, into Europe. Germany itself is on schedule to accept 1 million migrants this year, a staggering number that has prompted some political backlash in her own country.

"It was an audacious act that, in a single motion, threatened both to redeem Europe and endanger it, testing the resilience of an alliance formed to avoid repeating the kind of violence tearing asunder the Middle East by working together," Time wrote.

The continent's debt issues, led by Greece, also put Merkel in the hot seat at home. Of the 19 countries that use the euro, Germany has contributed the most to Greece's international bailout packages since 2010 — about $90 billion, including the deal currently being concluded. The deal has blunted "Grexit" fears — Greece's threat to drop the euro and exit the eurozone.

Germany balanced its national budget in 2014, the first time since 1969, and Merkel pressed her neighbors to follow Germany's austerity example of raising taxes while reducing borrowing and spending.

Merkel’s legacy — her bold, fraught, immensely empathetic act of leadership — flows not only from her childhood experience as a girl trapped behind a wall," Time wrote. "It also follows from what she learned as an adult, applying her disciplined, methodical approach to what she calls 'the things that matter to us most.'"

Good choice.
I usually don't give a crap about Time and it's bullshit ranks and opinions, but Angela is a great leader and deserves all recognition.
I feel sad that it reminds me my country has literally zero politicians that are as competent as her, though...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I'm very critical of her politics, but I applaud her for welcoming refugees and having faith in humanity. :applause:

Can we please talk about how badass as "Chancellor of the Free World" sounds like

Will there be fandom wars when Hillary is elected president?

I'm so here for Adangela vs Hillary Swift.

Good for her.

I'm still pressed that Bernie didn't make the shortlist even though he won the reader's poll tho, yet trash like Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Trump, and Cailtyn Jenner did.

Love her! Most germans don't realize what a great person she actually is. She's having her ARTPOP Era here right now.
