San Bernardino shooting: police say guns used were bought legally

Federal authorities say that the two assault rifles and two handguns used in the San Bernardino massacre were all purchased legally in the United States -- two of them by someone who's now under investigation.

Meredith Davis of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives says investigators are now working to make a connection to the last legal purchaser.

She says all four guns were bought four years ago but she's not saying whether they were purchased out of state or how and when they got into the hands of the two shooters.

Davis says California requires paperwork when guns change hands privately but many other states don't. 

In the state of California, there is no limit law for ammunition on most firearms. There are certain restrictions on types of ammunition. For example, California generally prohibits sale, possession or transportation of any fixed ammunition greater than .60 caliber.

Also, California does not require a license for the sale or purchase of ammunition nor does it keep records for long gun ammunition sales.

do people seriously think the majority of americans/whoever in america just go and get guns illegally  it's not exactly hard to get them legally to begin with.

I can literally go four miles and get a bucket of chicken, pair of pants, and a hunting rifle in the same building. This is America.

yeah, my step-dad has an AK so  im all for people being allowed to have a few guns for protection or whatever but we seriously need to step up the difficulty to get one in the first place. i could honestly go into a gun shop right now and be out within an hour lol

My cousin has an "legal" automatic AK  my dad has at least 20 handguns, shotguns, and rifles. I'm going sometime in the next few months to get my certification and carry permit and to buy a small caliber handgun (idk exactly what, yet. My friend begged me to get one).

No kidding. Background checks aren't even taken seriously in some places and apparently if it takes the NICS thing longer than three days to get back to you with your background check, the gun dealer can just let you have it. It's how the Charleston shooter got his gun even though he had a d--g charge.

my step dad is like that, lol  he has a ton of guns. he mostly has them just because he thinks they're cool and he likes to go shooting. yeah, im planning on getting something small when i move out of my parent's house even though the only gun im relatively good at shooting with is a sniper but you know, better safe than sorry.

exactly. which is a problem. i don't know why so many people are against backgrounds checks in the first place. if your bg is fine then why are you throwing a fit?? it's for you and everyone else's protection from potential shooters. i mean, i know a shooter can have a clean bg but stricter bg checks and regulations will help in the long run. people act as if others are being unconstitutional all because they want to be safe

1. Ted Cruz voted against proposed legislation because that's what his constituents and Republican base want, not because the NRA paid him off.

2. Good on them.

3. Mass shootings don't help gun sales. The threat of impending, restrictive legislation helps gun sales.

Purchased legally, modified illegally, background checks didn't work, California gun laws didn't work.

The government runs background checks. It's the government's responsibility to deliver these background checks in a timely manner. If they fail their responsibility then the sale proceeds, in this manner the Feds can't make excuses to withhold or interfere with someone's constitutional rights.

Same thing with the Sixth Amendment... if you're charged you have a right to be tried in a reasonable time frame. They can't take forever and hold you.

Here a guy was making and selling silenced machine guns to gangs (so much for gun laws). They took too long with the case so all the charges were dropped.

They're scared the gov'ment is going to make background checks so strict that no one will be allowed to own a gun then we'll live in some dictatorship ran by "King Obummer"
