Migrant crisis: Turkey and EU strike deal to limit refugee flow

Turkey and European leaders have struck a deal to try to control the flow of migrants to Europe.

Turkey will receive €3bn (£2.1bn) and political concessions in return for clamping down on its borders and keeping refugees in the country.

Talks on Turkey's accession to the European Union will also be revived.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it was a "historic day" in Turkey's relations with the EU.

Under the deal, Turkish citizens may be able to travel without visas in Europe's Schengen zone, which allows free movement between many European countries, by October 2016.

However, the rules will be relaxed only if Turkey meets certain conditions.

More than 720,000 migrants have arrived in Europe on Greek shores so far this year, the International Organization for Migration says, with most arriving from Turkey.

Many are fleeing conflict in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, and lived in makeshift camps in Turkey before their journey.

The €3bn will go towards helping Syrian refugees in Turkey. Ankara has already spent $8bn on helping those in need, Mr Davutoglu said.

"We are paying the price of the failure of the UN system not to solve the problem of the Syrian crisis at the earlier stages of the crisis," he said after the meeting, referring to his country and the EU.

NOOOOOO ! :O

People don't understand, refugees don't stay in refugee camps, they flee to Istanbul etc. Then, they can't find jobs of course because they don't speak turkish.

Turkey is not Germany. Turkish economy is not strong enough to find jobs for millions of refugees without getting its own citizens angry. As a result of all this, many refugees are on Istanbul streets now, especially in Taksim which even resulted in falling rent prices in Taksim because nightclubs - bars - lounges can't attract as many customer as they did in the past due to Taksim area's being more dangerous compared to the past.

Apparently Europe pays back to Turkey for f*cking with big bully Russia, and keeping refugees away... I am not happy with this agreement tbh. Like I don't need visa-free europe, I can go to europe whenever I want now too; it doesn't make a significant difference for me or any turkish citizens who have enough money to go to europe often for holidays. But results of agreement make significant difference in many turkish citizens life in a negative way...

Result:

Syrian refugees are living in bad conditions in Turkey; and Urban Turks hate syrian refugees which make their lives even worse for the reasons explained above.

What's racist? You see that homeless black guy? He's sleeping out in the cold street and Obama already bring 1,000 Syrians over and give them free housing, food and healthcare and Obama want to bring in 10,000 more. Is that fair for local homeless U.S. residents? The U.S. has 500,000 homeless so we can't be that charitable to the world.

I think they were actually going for racism towards the refugees, not the guy in the photo. Though, I'm not as well versed in the topic as I should be, so I could be wrong. :rip:

Your arguments is the arguments of people who don't want to welcome refugees if we had to wait for every homeless to have a home no refugees would ever get asylum. Of course it's not fair for that guy to be homeless but the aid given for such issues are not the same budget given to refugees anyway it's not that simple. Plus is it fair that Syrian have to go through war, they didn't ask for especially when we know many countries like the US are partly responsible for the situation there? Cause and effects, it's also time we take responsibilities. Also 10,000 among 300 millions citizen is not much.... Lebanon as 1 million, have you seen the size of Lebanon? The population is around 4 millions... yet they didn't b---h about the issues they have and let's be honest they have tons of problems of their own...

Mobster

It baffles me how people only bring these topics about homeless people in America when it serves the sole purpose of overshadowing other important issues...

Reminds me of the people complaining about everyone changing their profile pictures to the rainbow flag on 26.06.2015... "Call me when the world cares about people dying of hunger this much"... There are a lot of organizations that cover these problems, but you only seem too concerned about diminshing other issues... Just stop

But I'm only a man and I do what I can.

People are usually homeless because they can't mentally sustain that lifestyle, many things may prevent a homeless person from leading a 'normal' life but all refugees suffer from is being in a war-torn country.
