Refugees still welcome: Merkel defends her policy

Featured Posts

"German chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday defended her open-door refugee policy after France joined the growing number of EU countries calling for immigration restrictions in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.

The widening split between Berlin and other member states could hinder efforts to develop a common EU approach to the immigration crisis and to build a united front in the fight against terrorism.

Before setting off for Paris to see French president François Hollande, Ms Merkel told the Bundestag: “Simple isolation will not solve the problem for us.”

She defended her plans for a permanent system for an EU-wide redistribution of refugees away from Germany and other states that are currently receiving the largest numbers. And she said that the plan’s success would determine the future of the Schengen free-travel zone.

She was speaking hours after French premier Manuel Valls called for an end to new refugee inflows from the Middle East, implicitly rejecting the redistribution plan.

“We can’t accept more refugees in Europe” beyond what has been agreed, Mr Valls told reporters on Tuesday. “The solutions are over there [in the Middle East].”

His remarks follow a move this week by Sweden, a pioneer of refugee-friendly policies, to tighten immigration rules and earlier criticism from central European countries of refugee distribution plans.

Mr Valls’ comments highlight the connection Paris is making between the inflows of Middle Eastern refugees and terrorism.

The Paris attacks, perpetrated by at least two suicide bombers who had disguised themselves as Syrian refugees, “poses the problem of Europe’s ability to really implement the decisions that it has made”, he said. “Europe is facing its destiny,” he said, pointing to the failure to agree on a passenger name register, the struggle against arms smuggling and border controls. “If we don’t do this, the people will say, Europe, that’s over.”

The socialist government is under pressure from a resurgent far-right anti-immigration National Front. Mr Valls’ comments come less than two weeks before regional elections, in which the ruling Socialist party is expected to suffer losses.

Ms Merkel insists that refugee policy and fighting terrorism are separate issues. However, she says refugee inflows need to be “reduced” to relieve the pressure on German society and the public services.

Her coalition government is also under attack from the right in the form of the anti immigration Alternative für Deutschland party, which was climbed in the polls from below 5 per cent to about 8 per cent since the summer. Ms Merkel’s own CDU/CSU bloc is divided on the issue, with right wingers calling for more restrictive refugee policies"

I don't know enough about this to form an informed opinion...

German Monsters (and other European Monsters closer to this topic):

I'm trying to stay updated on the Syrian refugee issue on a global scale and not just back home in the U.S. and there's someone I'm "friends" with on Facebook that's recently been spouting off about how Syrian refugees are "destroying Germany" and "killing and raping people in the streets." He was bringing this up to justify his views about why the U.S. shouldn't be bringing in refugees because he believes the same thing will happen here (even though a lot of shooting tragedies, most of them actually, have been enacted by crazy people from home soil but whatevs, right?)

But is that true? People were commenting and asking for sources and evidence and he replied by saying he found some video that talked about it but then couldn't find it again and such and such. So I'd like to think that it isn't happening but I figured that people who actually live there would be able to give an accurate answer. I just wanna know also cuz a third of my family came to the U.S. from Germany more than 100 years ago and the German heritage runs strong.

Thanks!

I don't live in Germany myself, but I live in The Netherlands in a city with a huge migrant population (I think about 1 in 5 is muslim), and there are a few Syrian refugees too. The problem with refugees is that people enforce stereotypes on them based on the current migrant population (mostly from Morocco, Turkey and Algeria) and when the stereotype is true in one case they blow it out of proportions ('SEE! WE WERE RIGHT!'). There have been some cases of fights in refugee camps, but those are often with people who don't belong there: economic migrants from Albania, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Senegal, etc. The problems with Syrian refugees are there, but not really that big. But the proportions are very different, because in The Netherlands there will be about 150000 refugees in 2015 while in Germany already a million have arrived in 2015. I've heard stories however that in Sweden there are many problems with slums and indeed rape.

But the 'testosteron-bomb'-stereotype is better applicable for the biggest opponents - extreme right-wing groups.

Watched the whole thing. I like that the video shows some valid points on both sides of the coin, but to me it still felt like a very gray issue presented in black and white. It was uncomfortable to watch but it was good to see. Obviously given the title and most of the content (plus using Donald Trump's words to reinforce ANYTHING) I guess the video takes a more anti-immigration stance. All the violence happening in Europe is horrible. I'd like to know more about the policies of each nation on immigration because I wonder how open or restrictive each one of them is. In the U.S. it's extremely restrictive but not impossible. It takes a lot of time and paperwork and background checks.

Thanks for shedding some light on this! It's confusing and difficult to find sources that don't have a political slant already set.

Merkel is ****ing up Germany. She must go.

Europe is ****ing up themselves up by refusing the split the amount of refugees. It's ridiculous to believe they will stop coming especially now France is dropping even more bomb on Syria. They reduced the amount of money given in refugees camp in the Middle East and people just can't survive of course they are going to try to come to Europe. But 1 million for Germany is just too much. Everyone should take responsibility it's a crisis no one wants to do it but we have to otherwise we can't call ourselves human beings.

Not at all. It's actually the other way round. There's a group (or several groups, I should say) that have been against Muslims and generally immigrants ever since Hitler. They have been attacking refugees and their housings countless times, spreading rumors, rallying against anyone who isn't "German" and being total bullies virtually and in reality. Not a single refugee has made news for misbehaving in any kind of way. It's the Donald Trumps of Germany that misbehave and then blame refugees for their actions.

Our chancellor may be against gay marriage, but she's the best politician when it comes to the refugee crisis. I wish other European countries would take action and follow her footsteps because Germany alone cannot handle all the refugees (from an economic view, of course).
