It's in Turkey's interest to destroy IS, BUT Erdogan is more scared for a Kurdish nationalism when the Kurds win more territory over IS and thus, for his own gain, doesn't do that much against IS.

Assad wants IS, because IS helps fight other rebel groups. The goal of Assad is to make it him vs. IS with no other group between them. 

Russia wants Assad and is kinda scared for IS, because it gives them an excuse to bomb other rebel groups.

Iran wants Assad, and helps by giving military to that government.

Hezbollah helps Assad stay in power, too.

The West wants Assad to go, and wants to wipe out IS, but see it as too complicated.

 

There would NOT be a great coalition against IS, and it wasn't happening because:

- Russia wants Assad to stay in power

- France and the UK want to wipe out IS but especially for France, Assad HAS to go.

- The US and Germany want to keep a low profile and just bomb IS (preferably in Iraq only) and to weaken them step by step, hopefully being completely gone in 2-3 years.

 

Why is Russia suddenly playing the nice boy, trying to make friends with the West? Because the EU has to vote on enlengthening the sanctions (due to Crimea and Russia-backed rebel groups). His plan already failed pretty much it seems, because of this (thank Turkey for that!!).

I do agree on all that with you, and it's hard for me to even make up my mind on the subject. Like, every way I go with my thoughts, I find it hard to have a cohesive a--lysis of the situation in Syria, and how some countries want to help and some others want to preserve the ally (Assad).

Two things tho :

- There would have been no IS in Syria is there was a strong cohesive politics, in other words, IS took advantage of the "political and military weakness" to proliferate in Syria.

- Choosing to combat IS and backing Assad's position, is betraying those rebels who the westerns have supported up to now. Moreover, it would mean that in worst cases, we can accept to lose some of our morals and values to fight the enemy (Assad, who used gas to mass murder the rebels).

Sweden complained a few months ago that Russian planes were violating their space

 

Sweden did nothing tho

 

Here in Canada we have a military base in the far north called "Alert" and it was places there specifically to keep an eye on Russia cuz every so often Russian planes uninvitedly fly over Canadian land without an explanation

Finland, Estonia and many other countries did nothing because they are trying to avoid any sort of military conflict with Russia. They had right to do tho. 

I did not know about that military base. Putin loves seeing how much he can stretch other countries' territorial sovereignty.

Alert is in the very far north of Canada. Its the most Northern Community in the world (a few people actually live there permantly but most are temporary soldiers). 

 

Its necessairy cause the overwhelming majority of Canada is totaly empty. 90% of our population is concentrated within 160 miles of US border. So a base is kept there to whatch over Russia.

They are the only threat to Canada in the North cuz we know USA, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Greenland and other Nations in arctic circle are not hostile

 

And im not surprised all these Countries do nothing. Canada usually does nothing too, it just observes them to make sure they dont do anything. No one wants bad blood with Russia
