Mother of Paris terrorist: He "did not mean to kill anyone"

The mother of Paris suicide bomber Ibrahim Abdeslam — one of three Belgian brothers who are suspects in the attacks — is speaking out, saying she believed he “did not mean to kill anyone.”

The Abdeslam family, speaking to the Belgian website Het Laatste Nieuws, said they were “surprised” that Ibrahim, who had spent “a long time” in Syria, blew himself up. His mother, Faklan, speaking to a reporter through her nephew (Ibrahim’s cousin) at the family home in Molenbeek, Brussels, said she was sure he hadn’t planned on causing any deaths, noting, “The fact that his bomb belt exploded without killing anyone else says a lot.“

"We were really surprised that Salah was involved. Ibrahim was different. We did see that he had been radicalized, at least in part. But not so much that we ever thought he would commit an atrocity like this.”

I get that it must be really shocking and she must be really sad and it's not something easy to come to terms with, but you have to remember that people don't wear bomb belts for reasons other than to kill :\ At some point there was meaning to kill otherwise it wouldn't have gotten that far

I can't imagine how it must feel knowing that your child died committing an act of terrorism.

It's actually quite believable. I mean if he wanted to kill someone, he could have quite easily just grabbed someone and detonate the bomb... it does say a lot about his character if he decided to detonate it away from others.

I kind of hope it's true but he could have just detonated it early by accident quite easily.

It's nice of him he didn't kill anyone, however If he worn it at first place and went with these people then still it means something.

they apparently wanted to go inside the stadium but failed, and since the plaza around it was empty since everybody was in stadium, that's more likely why only one civilian got killed at the stadium. Either that or his belt exploded by acident, but probably not because he 'didnt want to kill anyone' if he didnt want to kill anyone he wouldnt have joined ISIS

From my understanding though, his older brother was the leading force out of the two of them and was the one who was trying to make him radicalised. I mean if your brother is strapping a bomb to you, what more can you really do other than detonate it away from people?

I'm not defending either of them, it would just be nice to hear if there was actually a hero among them, although I doubt it.

I don't want to defend him, but it's possible that he changed his mind last minute and just decided to kill himself.

Sometimes these brainwashed people are sent on suicide missions in Iraq and Syria without really wanting to, but they have no choice when the leader tells them "you're the chosen one". That's what some say, who escaped from there.

Of course it could be a possibility, we dont know what exactly happened and it's not even sure we'll find out, but it might as well not be that at all either. His mom probably just doesnt realize what her son did and prefers to believe he was good, and if that makes that poor woman sleep at night so be it. What annoys me is that his mother says he did not mean to kill anyone, when he actually made the choice to join ISIS and spend a lot of time in Syria, where let's be honest he probably didnt do any good. His mom probably doesnt know what the plan of the attack was, so saying that her terrorist son didnt mean to do anything bad when he conciously joined ISIS is rather disrespectful.

Anyway he wouldn't have joined in the first place if he didn't want to kill anyone. There's no excuse.
