Most of the biggest economists (most of them are awarded with nobels) had predicted from the beginning the nature of the Union and the dead end it would lead the Europeam economy. It's nothing more than full economic dominance of the Powerful countries to the weak and indirect colonization. Except the UK did want to be in the EU? I mean, the referendum of 1975, and back in the 50's Winston Churchill (conservative PM) enthusiastically talked about the United States of Europe. Right now a majority of UK citizens might not want to be a part of the European Union, but that's due to circumstances (badly handled refugee crisis and 3 million East-European immigrants in the past 10 years). Most UK citizens don't know nor care about how the EU works.
ShockPop 7,747
Let's get a few things straight. 1. The eu isn't what it was set out to be. The free trade agreement turned into a sick whipping tool with which to deny laws of the UK from being in place. 2. The government don't want out at all. The people do. The UK independence party got the most votes at the general election, but the way of counting via area meant they were not proportionally represented. 3. The eu puts uk people out of jobs and does not look after the interests of our working classes at all. Their axing of the green deal and refusal to let terrorists be deported being evidence of this. 4. There are no up sides to being in the eu if you're the average person in the UK. I hope we leave. Charge what we want for exports and become a richer country with industry instead of getting our supplies from a million miles away when Doris down the road makes the same thing. Benji 20,113
I'm torn on whether I want us to leave the EU or not. Half of the EU uses us and the rest hate us. We would financially be so much better off but with how the world is, I don't know whether it's worth just staying in there to just have some form of stability if things turn sour.... although if the past is a sign of anything, it's not like France or anyone would be helpful to us. The amount of times we've had to save their asses is ridiculous.

What are you on about hun? "Sick whipping tool"? Get a grip. The EU doesn't deny UK laws being made... That's a fallacy that people are fed by The Sun, the Daily Mail etc. 2. Some of the government DO want out, there are eurosceptic wings in both the Labour Party and the Tories, but obviously more so with the Tories. As someone corrected you already, UKIP did not finish in 1st at the election. A lot of opinion polls have stated that, come the referendum, the majority would vote to stay in the EU- Wiki has a nice collection of the polls which you can view here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_European_Union_membership_referendum#Opinion_polling 3. The EU is the UK's biggest trade partner. Without the foreign investment and purchasing power of other EU states, millions in the UK would lose their job... Sooooo I don't understand where you got this argument from. 4. That's your opinion and not rooted in facts. I hope we stay. I love being part of something bigger than just one nation. The EU isn't perfect, at all. The handling of the migrant/refugee crisis reflects that, and the proposed TTIP deal with America makes my skin crawl - but saying that, I still think it is better to be within the EU and fighting for change rather than just give up completely on it. It could be amazing, and so much of it already is. It needs some tweaks, for sure, but to jump ship? Nah, I'm alright. P.S: you mention 'Doris', who seems to make things down the road that we would otherwise import. Sorry, but that is a total fantasy. We have barely anything made in this country anymore. The legacy of Thatcher is that we have no industry. This country's economy runs due to financial services, not millions of 'Doris's' that live down the road. Charge what we want for exports and become a richer country with industry instead of getting our supplies from a million miles away when Doris down the road makes the same thing. 1. The EU was supposed to be political partnership right from the beginning. It started as economic partnership to make the French and German economy more dependent on eachother, paving the way to the peaceful period we live in right now. Next to that, the goal of the creators of the Union was full integration, with one state which would be the United States of Europe. 2. A substantial part of the government wants the UK to leave the EU. A lot of the British public also wants to leave, but whether it is a majority or not is not sure (it fluctuates). 3. The EU brings more jobs to the UK than it costs the UK. All that the EU costs to the UK is 9 billion, and what the UK receives back for this far exceeds that and cannot be described in money alone. It brings partnership, global power and influence, economic growth to the UK and at the same time protects UK citizens from the far-right Conservative party. The UK would not just lose impact on decision-making, but also make the UK lose their cultural influence. If the UK leaves, it could very well be that German became the most-used and biggest second language in the EU, rather than English. 4. The average UK citizen - a middle class person - has a serious advantage from the UK being EU member. Taxes, for example, are lower because the EU creates jobs which contribute to a better budget, allowing for lower taxes. The EU also protects the UK citizens from unhealthy air that would be the cause of economically liberal policy. There's no serious advantage of leaving the EU. Less free trade agreements, less influence in the EU and in global organizations like the IMF, less economic growth, less cheap labour, less cultural influence, Scotland splits from the UK, etc.

Most UK citizens don't know nor care about how the EU works. The UK was never fully under the influence of the EU (not that it was always to their interest, they still have to contribute an amount of money to the Union that is much larger than the amoun tof money that the Union invests on them). Politically, they never truly wanted the Union. And the people have nothing to do with the politics of the countries, they only want to maintain a good life for them and their children in the borders of an aging Capitalism. Capitalism is the roof that everyone is under and that the people support so that the capitalists can enjoy it's protection. The whole structure maintains itself since the wealth and influence remains in the hands of the few, governments, companies, capitalists. To sum up UK citizens or any other citizens were never the ones that decided about their countries entrance to the EU, it was the capital. The ones that run the huge companies that gather all the money, have young children work on their factories, make huge scandals to "wash away" money, the ones that make War in the third world and then deny the refugees a selter or use them as cheaper working hands. Hence why a lot of the working class and lower class wish to leave as it's them who are being hit the hardest by the union.
