Why is John and his wife so calm?

Alot of people here don't understand why John and his wife seem so calm. For example: When John sees the blood bath, the blood coming from the wall, the dead people or his wife being so calm with the fact her lost son is back but I personally think you are trying to look for realism in a show that is anything but realistic.

Ryan Murphy is known for creating these scenes where you don't quite understand what's going on. John and his wife acting so bizarre is part of what adds to the general spooky and mysterious atmosphere throughout every episode. If they would've just acted normal and 'human' then we (the viewers) would manage to digest everything but perhaps that's the opposite of what Ryan is trying to make? Maybe we aren't supposed to understand everything and to easily digest what's going on.

I think it's definitely not a case of bad writing but rather a genius concept!

He's a policeman and she's a doctor, I think they're accustomed already of seeing dead people and blood...

i agree 100%, i think it adds to the perplexing nature the Hotel Cortez is having on the entire family (Scarlett included).

i am truly loving this season so far.
i think that if people are confused in where the storyline is headed, all of their questions is what should make them want to continue watching!

John is blind, that's what he is. Ignoring a huge ass bath full of blood :saw: But I do get what you mean. My theory is that they were so damaged by Holden going missing they are just numb all of the time.

Because he is confused, he isn't in the right mental state.

The hazy, non-sensical way they react kind of reminds me of dream-logic, like the characters in a David Lynch or Dario Argento film.

Alex seemed almost as if she were in a trance, or as if she were participating in her  own nightmare -willingly walking and following her son into the unknown, suddenly brandishing a gun, not doing normal things like calling the police, or her husband, or getting her son checked out at a hospital etc. Of course, it could all be lazy writing, but maybe the hotel has some sort of weird power over those who visit, and/or it is indeed a nod to those horror movies that are more in the surreal vein. With the stilted dialog and odd reactions that are pretty much in line with what some call "pure horror" in that things don't seem to operate in our world.

I think it all just contributes to the theory that the Hotel isn't real
