JusKeepBreathin 19,311
So what plenty of celebrities have alter egos. From the Fresh Prince to Timbaland, From Pink to Eminem. Nicki Minaj has fifteen of them. Lady GagaJO CalderonShe probably has more. They are different sides to her personality. It doesn't mean they are no her. Alcina Dimitrescu 1,156
"I called it - "Lady Gaga is a character"" Well no **** Sherlock ofc it was, whats annoying and is her outright admitting it.
scorpion 409
Not sure why this is a big deal? She was smart enough to build a persona who could take any blows and grow stronger from it . In psychology highly distressed children will sometimes have multiple personality disorder....Not to diagnose Gaga ( im clearly no psychologist) , however is she all that different? She had to protect herself. Gaga is and was a vehicle for empowerment and protection

PopBitch 1,218
I don't see how admitting she created Gaga to cope with her anxiety and depression takes away anything at all from her artistry. To me that makes it all the more beautiful. Would you care to elaborate? You're not addressing me in that comment. But I feel different. I doesn't take away from her artistry but I don't buy i t. IMO she created Gaga to make it in the business, period. She wasn't making it as Stefani. That's an oversimplification, but a lot of truth in that. As Gaga, she could do a lot as she gained popularity and expanded on it artistically and visually. David Bowie was David Robert Jones and had many, many incarnations and even in different forms sometimes with other people for seven years until he became David Bowie somewhere in there and within that persona after seven years created other alter egos. But he became Bowie as he was desperately trying to make it in the business and running out of time. It took Space Oddity to give him traction. But, honestly, I just have to ignore a lot of what Gaga says anymore. I just find it unbelievable she created Gaga to cope with anxiety and depression. I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I'm sure she believes it this year and believed something else three years ago. I'm not trying to convince anyone else. For me, it's another thing I take with a grain of salt. Sometimes I think Gaga is bipolar.
isaacanthony 142
Her and Troy together were BEASTS! They knew exactly how to market the brand that we call "Lady Gaga" this is why Gaga is in text books... She played all the right moves.lets look back at her younger days before her breakout she dressed pretty normal, had friends, normal HAIR! so that whole bs that she's always been outrageous etc...is a built. She made the perfect formula. i still love her though and I think she's extremely talented. She did what she had to do to get to the top and now she's calling the shots. gagzus 15,889
I'm sick of saying this Lady Gaga is her stage name nothing more or less The way she described the creation of Gaga in the Emotional Revolution thing literally contradicts what she said for the first 3 years of her career that it is her stage name and she got it when she was in her early 20s when she was making music downtown. She likes to over exaggerate let's not forget
eifulien 2,956
I already addressed this and I do think it's a wonderful message but I think fans are overestimating its wildness or bravery. I mean, everyone knows this. Art is a way of coping with personal problems in most circumstances. It might seem like Gaga made some revolutionary statement, but in fact she's saying one of the most obvious things an artist could say. Why that bothers me is precisely because of why I loved Gaga as an artist: she wanted to be living art. And she has murdered that idea year by year. Again: I don't think that's a bad thing 'cause she evolves her artistry the way she wants to, but it explains why I'm disappointed, because all her amazing ideas are just left sitting somewhere in her earliest era, hinted at but never expressed and forgotten in this fanbase even though it's what could have cemented the spectacular innovation in pop history. Now she's just another pop singer with a large and devoted fanbase. I had bigger hopes for her. As a fan who began stanning since Swinefest it was very interesting to read your thoughts throughout the thread. But still, don't you think she grew tired of people's perception of her as a wacky weirdo wearing meat dresses? I mean at one point her eccentric looks did overshadow her talent because most people see "the cover", they care about the appearance, whereas Gaga happened to have a filling behind it that remained somewhat neglected maybe? She didn't want to be just her dress, her outfit anymore as she is too often reprorted to be. Then she took another approach ofc, and became all 'preachy' with ARTPOP and we all know how that ended up... But I believe her passion for art will always be here. I think she will just show it in a different way with LG5.

Ty3009 232
Google Interview - March 2011Some of you are way overthinking this. Lady Gaga is a stage name. It's not like she goes into an interview thinking "Okay, now I'm in character as Lady Gaga". At least not anymore than you or I would go into a performance or more high-pressure setting acting in a certain way. Personality is a social construct that we all create and it shifts day-to-day and throughout our lives. So she (and her collaborators) created Gaga as a fresh start in the industry. Gaga and Stefani are totally the same person, one is just her stage name. Maybe she occasionally gets tired of the baggage that comes along with that stage name, the expectations people she works with have about what LADY GAGA is, so she might try to put them more at ease by saying "call me Stefani". But it doesn't mean that any of her artistic output, interviews, performances, etc were not 100% "her".

Now she's just another pop singer with a large and devoted fanbase. I had bigger hopes for her.I totally agree with you. What Gaga is doing is healthy - true. It's normal - true. But it's also, quite frankly, uninteresting. Gaga was really doing something interesting in the beginning of her career, with this exaggerated pop star persona that came out of nowhere. She was a whole package. She fascinated. And you were intrigued by her potential. But ever since BTW, when she started working on the Mother Monster and depression and bullying stuff, that's been changing. And while it is, once again, good and healthy that she's doing this stuff, I don't find it compelling.I used to think Gaga was going to be like the Michael Jackson or Madonna of our time, or even more. But I think I placed my hopes too high. And I almost agree with her detractors back at the beginning, that the clothes and videos and antics were a way to compensate for something. She's given us very good music, but it's not revolutionary, like I hoped she would one day do. She's very talented, and I still believe that, but maybe her talents aren't where I thought they would be. Maybe she's more content to be Barbra Streisand than the Beatles. And that's not bad. I like Barbra. But when you were holding out for her "Rubber Soul," it's a bit disappointing to have to shift your expectations. My attention has increasingly gone to other artists. I joined this forum to learn about Gaga, but ironically I ended up paying more attention to other artists like Lana, Marina, and Florence. Marina and Florence are kind of going through the same "good and healthy" transformation that Gaga is doing, and in my opinion, their music isn't as appealing since they've started battling their demons (ironic? selfish? evil? who knows). Maybe if I get to the place that they're at, I'll appreciate their music and their new approach more.Gaga almost always stressed that Gaga wasn't just a character or a stage name. It was her. Now I didn't believe her when she says stuff like she showers and the heels are still on, but I appreciated her tenacity in wanting us to believe that. Now she's contradicting that. She's lied a lot and it frankly annoys me a bit (that part about her changing reality from MTN is probably 100% true, it's the only explanation I can find for her inconsistencies). I do think the TF(M) nostalgia monsters have a point in that this isn't the same "monster" *rimshot* we're dealing with compared to 2009.I'm still going to stan for Gaga. I'm just not going to have such high expectations anymore. Clearly I either misunderstood her or she herself has changed her career trajectory. I still love her music. I'll still defend her from haters. I'll buy her Cole Porter album (super excited for that btw).
