Ben Carson on Gay Marriage during GOP debate

Ben Carson defended his views on homos-xuality Wednesday during the third Republican presidential debate, asserting that opposition to same-s-x marriage did not connote homophobia.

Carson was asked about his membership on the board of Costco by co-moderator Carl Quintanilla, who also said that the retailer had been adjudged to be one of the most gay-friendly companies in America.

Carson asserted that there was no contradiction between the two positions, telling Quintanilla that “obviously you don’t understand my views on homos-xuality.”

The former surgeon went on to say that “I believe our Constitution protects everybody regardless of their s-xual orientation. … I also believe that marriage is between one man and one woman [but] there’s no reason you can’t be fair to the gay community.”

Carson broadened that argument by saying that the implication of homophobia was “one of the myths that the left perpetrates on our society. This is how they frighten people and get people to shut up.”

It's a fascinating position to take and he provides all the reasoning needed to refute his own position.

Step 1: Agree that LGBTQ are protected under the Constitution like all other currently protected groups.

Step 2: After validating the Constitution as the guiding document, remember it includes separation of church and state right up at the top.

Step 3: Believe something specific about marriage based on your personal religious convictions.

So far so good. Just one more step Ben.

Step 4: Understand that your personal belief is irrelevant based on steps 1 and 2 and therefore prevent it from impacting American legislation thus upholding the Constitution, just like our founding fathers did!

Don't get me wrong, I DO NOT support his viewpoint, but if he would state that it is his personal belief due to his religion, but that he also believed that his religion shouldn't dictate the laws of the land...I would be okay with it. However, I don't think that is his stance on this issue.

The Republican Party is a bigger joke than they were the last election.  I am shocked that these two are the front-runners.  The Republican Party has become a party under the thumb of the far right Tea Party zealots, and because of that they will never get anybody into the White House.  Trump plays to that base with his bigotry and soundbites and Ben Carson is as far right as you can get.  They will never get the moderate voters who could be swayed to vote Republican, because they keep pandering to the far right fringe of the base who have gotten too much power in the Republican Party.

As mature as your reasoning is for "being okay with his opinion," I have to point something out that I've noticed a lot lately. This is in no way an attack on you, just something that I believe needs to be said. This culture that we live in that thinks that someone's bigoted beliefs are somehow excusable by saying "they're my personal opinion due to my religion" is EXTREMELY damaging to the LGBT community. Just because that is someone's opinion, doesn't mean that opinion is somehow okay to have. It does not give them a free pass to be homophobic if they say "It's just my opinion." That opinion is still homophobic and that opinion is still attacking a minority and invalidating that minority. We NEED to stop trying to excuse people from being racist, s-xist, or homophobic just because those bigoted beliefs are "just their opinion." Anyway, like I said, not a personal attack on you, just something I felt like needed to be said and as an LGBT I hate seeing homophobes have their bigoted beliefs excused just because they say "it's just their opinion."
