Commercially maybe... But those comparisons with the 80s never make any sense. Cindy and Gaga are so different. Cindy always seemed more like a free spirit, not very into being a big star and making a huge career, although in recent interviews she gave a couple of years ago she came across a little bitter, especially about Madonna. Gaga on the other hand is very strategic and disciplined careerwise, she definitely aims for commercial success and lasting impact. That's not to say she isn't as creative as Cindy was. But when it comes to the business Gaga is way more focused, so I guess in that point she is much more like Madonna than Cindy, but suffered a bad management for ARTPOP era.

Those vocals on the video are not even half as good as Gaga's.. 

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I prefer Gaga over Cyndi in many regards, but when it comes to vocal abilities, as I said, aside from Cyndi having an over all more impressive vocal range (call me when Gaga hits that whistle register) Cyndi has soul and Gaga does not.

Technical skill.

I love that performance of Dope, but it's obviously all artifice. That isn't an example of soulful singing, it's pure theatrics. "It's all theater joe." I love Gaga's vocals, but that doesn't mean I have to think they are soulful or honest. She is an entertainer first and foremost, Cyndi is a singer first and foremost.

If you listen to soul music, or the blues, or any jazz that isn't sold at Starbucks, you can hear the difference between Gaga's theatrically emotionally manipulative vocals and Cyndi's raw soulful vocals.
