The plain cracker was part of a survival kit on one of the lifeboats and was kept as a souvenir. It sold for £15,000, reports the Liverpool Echo, fetching £5,000 more than predictedby Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes in Wiltshire. It was bought by a collector in Greece. The biscuit was saved by James Fenwick, a passenger on the Carpathia which picked up Titanic survivors. He kept it in an envelope complete with original notation, “Pilot biscuit from Titanic lifeboat April 1912”. RMS Titanic had been four days into a week-long Transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York when the supposedly 'unsinkable' ship struck the icebergon 14 April 1912. The ship sank less than three hours later at around 2.20am on 15 April. The Spillers and Bakers “Pilot” biscuit was saved by James Fenwick, who was a passenger onboard the SS Carpathia, which went to the aid of survivors from the ship. He put the snack in a Kodak photographic envelope complete with the original note, which stated “Pilot biscuit from Titanic lifeboat April 1912”. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: “It is the world’s most valuable biscuit. “We don’t know which lifeboat the biscuit came from but there are no other Titanic lifeboat biscuits in existence to my knowledge. “It is incredible that this biscuit has survived such a dramatic event - the sinking of the world’s largest ocean liner - costing 1,500 lives. “In terms of precedence, a few years ago a biscuit from one of Shackleton’s expeditions sold for about £3,000 and there is a biscuit from the Lusitania in a museum in the Republic of Ireland.” The Titanic sank after striking an iceberg on April 14 1912 during its maiden voyage to New York from Southampton.
