Ben Carson compares abortion to slavery

(CNN) - Ben Carson on Sunday compared abortion to slavery, saying he'd like to see the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade overturned so that the practice can be made illegal.

"Think about this. During slavery -- and I know that's one of those words you're not supposed to say, but I'm saying it -- during slavery, a lot of the slave owners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave. Anything that they chose to do," Carson said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"And, you know, what if the abolitionist had said, you know, 'I don't believe in slavery. I think it's wrong. But you guys do whatever you want to do?'" he added. "Where would we be?"

"In the ideal situation, the mother should not believe that the baby is her enemy and should not be looking to terminate the baby. You know, things are set up in such a way that the person in the world who has the greatest interest in protecting the baby is the mother. We've allowed the purveyors of the vision to make mothers think that that baby is their enemy and that they have a right to kill it. Can you see how perverted that line of thinking is?"

First off, disgusting.

Secondly, "during slavery, a lot of the slave owners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave." Yet he believes he has the right to tell women what they can and can't do with their bodies?

It's great to see someone with no uterus making major decisions concerning women's healthcare in this country. :madge:

A lot of men still think women are slaves so it would go along with that line of thinking.

I still don't get why people are so against abortion. Like in terms of statistics we have a large enough population to sustain the human race, assuming there isn't some huge factors that wipes out like 80% of the population.

Regardless, most abortions are held in early periods (yes there are some cases when their held shockingly late, like at the point webbing around the fingers has been removed) But regardless people who say that child "could have been the cure to cancer ect." are just pulling an bull**** excuse to be against abortion.

In relation a child is just 23 chromosomes from one biological parent and 23 from another. Thats basically what human life is (obviously there are heaps of environmental factors to that) but in that augment, a male masturbating is technically killing possible "cures to cancers" and a women menstruating is doing the same thing. That whole argument is completely invalid.

Republicans will say ANYTHING in the hopes that you will use your right-wing fundamentalist ignorance to vote for their pro-billionaire super corporate backed agenda.

honestly, we could stand for a cessation in population growth, or an outright reduction by at least 1 billion people. the planet is headed towards ecological ruin BECAUSE of over population.

yet another reason why people should be in support of women's right to choose what to do with her own body...

Wow. Clueless idiot.

This man should never be elected president.

Mothers think that their unborn baby is their enemy?

He clearly DOES NOT GET IT.

It's not invalid and you shouldn't be dismissive of other peoples' opinions.

People like Dr. Carson truly believe a human life is being terminated. Like you said, it would be pretty horrific to terminate a baby's like 8 months after conception. It would be a partial birth and you'd hear the baby cry and gasp for life on a table before doctors crushed its skull or otherwise killed it.

People like Dr. Carson don't draw a line between that scenario and a hollow body of cells that is actively developing into a child. And no, masturbation isn't killing a fetus because those cells haven't fertilized a woman's egg. Very different and I'm confused as to what you could have possibly meant.

Im am clearly stating that factors like "having the cure for cancer ect" being intelligent is largely contributed to environmental factors. So posing and argument based on that against abortion is pretty incorrect. Whilst yes, genetic factors would play roles in intelligence (indicated through recent and past both psychological and biological twin studies) the foetus is an opportunity. If that opportunity involves a dangerous environment, in which environmental factors will not contribute to the growth of a socially valid individual but rather a socially invalid, deviant, dysfunctional individual in that case that foetuses life was already predetermined. In some cases, it would be a better option to abort the foetus.

Whilst others argue that adoption is the way to go, you simply have to do a little research on how that could be even more damaging to the future of the foetus. Lets take this to another direction. Lets say if the cells of the foetus are extremely mutated. Wouldn't it be better to abort that foetus rather than having to let it suffer with an condition that would eventually be destroyed, most likely painfully, due to different selection pressures.

Masturbating isn't killing a foetus, it is killing the potential of life. This is an argument many people take when debating against abortion that it is taking away a "potential of life".

I see this argument as another vaccination debate, where ill educated people are really basing their arguments on ill evidence. Give women the choice to do what they like in terms of abortion. I don't like the fact that many times it is a male, who doesn't have to live with the burden, who decides.

I didn't know fetus was spelled different in the UK. "Foetus" caught my attention.

Well, I learned something new today.

Ok I wouldn't have compared it to slavery like that. But I myself am not comfortable with the idea of abortion. I only support it in situatioms where pregnancies result in complications that endanger both mother and fetus such as pre-eclampsia for example

the whole argument "women should decide what to do with their bodies" for people like me is not a valid argument.

I see fetusus as life and as such its not just about the womans body anymore but also the life inside her

i dont like abortion. Why should they only be considered lives after they leave the womb? Whats the difference?
