NY mag: "What's the point of Katy Perry, even?"

I'd like to see you call out every person that has mentioned Gaga and had made comparisons in this thread because you'd be here all day.  I am not attempting to downplay either artist, I'm putting it into perspective for those that clearly are unable to see a difference in opinion which is clearly the case for you.  Both artists have 'meaningless' tracks which do not mean they are bad.  This was my point if you attempted to read it rather than attempting to bash me solely because I defended Katy.

Um hello how on earth are you not trying to bring down Gaga. You're telling me that you didn't quite a song saying it was meaningless :trollga: You call using someone else who isn't part of the discussion "putting it into perspective"?  :omfgaga:That's bringing someone down hun, sorry to ruin your illusion. know that you're simply going to reply "I didn't say that did you make an attempt to read" like always. Are you going to personally attack me again? :later:

EDIT: Let's not.

I edited my comment prior to your reply, please read.

...and please don't insinuate I'm bashing Gaga, I am simply pointing out that both artists have aspects of their albums that are as some would call "meaningless". I'd hardly waste my time on a Gaga fan forum if I disliked her. :trollga:

I saw, fine. I didn't agree with the bashing against Katy either though. I said it in my first post. The hate between them is unreasonable seeing how they're both friends.

I agree and I don't want to come across as attacking you, I apologise if it came across that way.

Kacey Elizabeth

Well, she is mostly surrounded by casual fans, right? I mean, I don't really know anyone who would put Katy Perry as their fave, they probably like her, but she is often amongst other artists people like and never hardcore worshipping like other stars...

you are obviously living under a rock if you actually think that. Katy has MILLIONS of passionate & devoted KatyCats, not causal fans.

I love Katy, and I think that she is incredibly talentet. But this is so true. I was gagging while reading.

I don't even know why I'm still on GGD when I know threads like these will be made :rip:

Because they are made for everyone. Gaga could have a thread on an article just like this and you would be all up in that thread. You don't have to be here, you know. No one is making you stay on this fanforum...there are others you can go hang out on.

Bad Bromance

That article is quite harsh on Katy.  To support their ridiculous argument they felt the need to compare her to Taylor Swift?  Newsflash!!  Taylor isn't that groundbreaking either!  Yes, she did a complete 180 degree change when she went from a country singer to a pop singer, but she isn't someone who I would consider to be that much above Katy with her pop music.

I'm not a Katy Perry fan, but I certainly don't hate her.  I think she's very successful and loved by millions of KatyCats around the world.  There are some Katy songs that I actually bop to, such as California Girls, Hot 'N Cold, and I Kissed A Girl.  My favorite Katy ballads are Teenage Dream, Firework, and Unconditionally.  Her other songs, though, I don't care very much for them but that's not a bad thing either because we all have different tastes in music.

Having stated the above, the fact that the media feels the need to compare one pop girl to another just to fuel stan wars is pretty sad, if you ask me.  People are going to love or hate an artist no matter what unfounded garbage NY Magazine decides to publish.  I certainly hope people have enough common sense to think for themselves and not allow an article to sway their opinion.

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

This Moment isn't for getting personal guys, It Takes Two to derail a thread so please Choose Your Battles and let's keep the discussion mature and civil :neyde:

Horrible use of song puns aside, I'd definitely recommend listening to those songs because they're good examples of where Katy's not all bright and bubblegummy - she has that side and it's right there in her albums, those types of songs just aren't released as singles usually unfortunately :noparty: Well Uncondishaaanaaalee was and we saw how that went so I don't think those are what they'd want to release as singles because they don't perform as well as her more upbeat tracks. It comes down to what people want and appreciate more from Katy and it seems to be the fun tracks which is totally fine  She still provides serious and emotionally driven songs on her albums so I think it's unfair to not look below the surface of the colourful outfits and music videos and delve into her discography yet call her and her music plain & fun & mindless & all of those other things :duck:

How ridiculous. Even more so than all the "Katy is boring and creates meaningless music" replies.

Are a lot of you seriously that blind to Katy's brand and power or are Monsters still bitter because she outsold Gaga?

Katy can produce radio friendly bops however it doesn't mean it's generic or meaningless. I connect with a lot of Katy's songs because I feel her pure emotion. I imagine a majority of you have only heard her singles rather than the full album.  Just because Katy outsold your "fave" doesn't give you the right to downplay her just because you personally dislike her music.  There's a reason she sells so well.

Also, need I remind you all of ARTPOP? It was hardly groundbreaking or meaningful...

"Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had a salad today..."

...powerful and meaningful lyrics there guys...

If Gaga didn't exist, I would still consider Katy to be an uninspiring, minimally talented, label created project. And yes, that opinion comes from watching her over the past few years and listening to her albums...not just her singles.

Every artist will have songs and lyrics that aren't deeply meaningful or that miss the mark in their careers. I could pull out silly lyrics of useless songs from MJ, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc. That doesn't mean they weren't artists...artists who changed music in some way. There are artists who take chances with their music, who take risks...who evolve, shock, challenge...something other than being just an entertainer.

Gaga's most popular moment to release a single was at the start of the Born This Way era...the time when the whole world was waiting for her debut single. Gaga released Born This Way, which at the time was a controversial subject...much more so than it is now! What did Katy do with her moment? She released Roar. That's the difference between Gaga and Katy right there!

You know, I don't  usually enjoy a cup of tea, but this is one tastes so sweet.

thoughts:

i have felt exactly like the writer of this article since 2012, katys frozen image was getting old. I was really excited when she was rumored to be making a dark album and when that didn't happen I just gave up. The thing is that the Katy Perry we see isn't the real Katy Perry, when she first came out she thought outside of the box and it was exciting and it seems like as the money came in she was ready to concede her artistic thoughts to the record labels ideas of how she would be most successful. This makes her seem disingenuous in my eyes. Like the popular girl in school being whatever image it takes for her to be popular. I was a big fan of Katy in 2008 because she was such a fresh idea. Fergie and Gwens album cycles had finished and here came this new girl singing about kissing a girl on the radio!!! Woah, that was different. I was drawn to her and her colorful fruits that decorated her live tv performances. Artists weren't doing stuff like that around that time. So its sad to see where she's at in 2008.

final though:

DID THE AUTHOR HAVE TO BRINGUP BRITNEYS MENTAL STATE THAT MUCH!?!?

What is it with the critics and media thinking Taylor Swift did a "180 degree change" .... her sound was Pop as **** in most of Red's singles...

And a whole lot of her other songs before that

But I'm only a man and I do what I can.
