NY mag: "What's the point of Katy Perry, even?"

Katy could disappear tomorrow, what would be her legacy to the pop culture apart from her 10 hit singles?

It's not about competition and someone being beneath or above others. I'ts not even a bad thing, everyone has their spot. Katy's spot is being an entertainer, there is nothing wrong with that especially since she's a successful one.

Need I say more?

If all that's really on the table for you is the question: "is Katy an artist or not"? (which is not even on-topic) then you already have my answer in my previous posts: I don't have a definition of art so I have no idea and I don't care.

So I suggest you start quoting someone else to spread your views 'cause honestly, I can't do anything with them.

She's white bread. Not good for you, there are breads with better nutritional value but most buy plain old boring white.

What's the point with the quotes you posted? I was just asking what Katy's impact to the music world is apart from her hit singles. She has more than Gaga so someone could say that she is not inferior than her.
As i said before everyone has their spot and there's nothing bad with that. Accept it and move on.

Gaga is not Katy and Katy is not Gaga.

How is this not on topic? Did you even read the whole article?

If you have no idea and you don't care about what art is then i suggest you to start replying to another topic because this one is not for you.
Cheers.

They never spoke about a feud in this article. Someone must of not read the article.

The Taylor Swift comparison hun "and Taylor Swift pushes us to embrace vulnerability and femininity (with some emotionally volatile undercurrents), Katy Perry pushes such avant-garde, high concepts as teenagers, horny; California girls, awesome; aliens, weird; and kissing girls, actually kinda nice." Someone must not have read my response :later:

And how are Pop Taylor's songs any better than Katy's? And least Katy did Luke/Martin pop first....

Max Martin was producing pop hits when Katy was still in elementary school. His rise to be an in-demand producer came with hit songs he did for the Backstreet Boys. If anything, Katy was copying Britney, Kelly Clarkson and Pink by using Max.

Taylor has never worked with Luke, but he started about a decade later than Max with artists like Kelly, Pink and Avril.

I do have the feeling that Katy will switch it up and really dig to a place in order to offer something... different. Her career is at that point. But she's been studying...

Must have been written by a Gaga or a Taylor fan. lol

Anyway I think the problem is people take Katy's music way too seriously. Just listen and have fun.

How ridiculous. Even more so than all the "Katy is boring and creates meaningless music" replies.

Are a lot of you seriously that blind to Katy's brand and power or are Monsters still bitter because she outsold Gaga?

Katy can produce radio friendly bops however it doesn't mean it's generic or meaningless. I connect with a lot of Katy's songs because I feel her pure emotion. I imagine a majority of you have only heard her singles rather than the full album.  Just because Katy outsold your "fave" doesn't give you the right to downplay her just because you personally dislike her music.  There's a reason she sells so well.

Also, need I remind you all of ARTPOP? It was hardly groundbreaking or meaningful...

"Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had a salad today..."

...powerful and meaningful lyrics there guys...

ARTPOP wasn't meaningful or groundbreaking cuz it was meant to be that way-light,colorful,silly,tongue in cheek.

Not you with your comparisons and using one of ARTPOPs fun songs :later: But at the same time you're snubbing songs like Dope and Gypsy which had meaning. Though of course you won't care and you'll keep trying to extend the stan war.

This article & writer already got dragged to the pits in the comment section and Twitter already, so I guess what I was planning to say already has said. However, contrary to what the article said, Katy has a specific model/theme/trait. Bubblegum, lighthearted, and happy pop music, vibrant, colorful and cartoony looks/image & performances, and candy imageries/outfits all are associated with Katy in pop music and culture. When people think of those stuff, Katy comes to their mind. Not all her songs are what the writer described. The writer obviously only has listened to I Kissed a Girl, California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, and Roar (which still have meaning and just because they are fun doesn't mean that they are pointless). One of the Boys, Thinking of You, Mannequin, Lost, Self Inflicted, I'm Still Breathing, Fingerprints, I Think I'm Ready, A Cup of Coffee, Circle the Drain, The One That Got Away, Who Am I Living For?, Pearl, Not Like the Movies, Part of Me, Wide Awake, Unconditionally, Ghost, Love Me, This Moment, Double Rainbow, By the Grace of God, It Takes Two, and Choose Your Battles are all beautiful, deep, complex, and emotional songs with a lot of meaning which really do make you think. Katy's music isn't bland - it's very diverse. Not to mention that all her songs are written by her and they are like her diaries.

Katy does evolve, both by the terms of her style and her music. Just listen to all her albums in full, watch all her tours and performances from each era, and look at her looks & videos form each era. It's more than just some hair color. Katy manages to reinvent herself and evolve while still being vibrant, happy, beautiful, playful, and fun and sending a positive, empowering message. She literally went from a Christian gospel singer-songwriter to an indie rock musician to a pop-rock chick to a pop superstar.
