Doctors in Sweden are allegedly performing illegal ‘virginity tests’ on teenage girls, an undercover investigation has found.

Religious parents sometimes request the test to see if their children are ‘pure’.

But as well as being horrifyingly intrusive, the so-called test is not even accurate.

It examines whether girls still have a hymen in place (a thin membrane covering the entrance to the vagina.) It can break the first time they have s-x but it might also break before this, for example through exercise or injury.

Reporters for the Swedish current affairs programme Kalla Fakta (Cold Fact) showed that across the country some doctors would carry out the test.

One undercover journalists posed as a 17-year-old and another posed as her aunt, looking to obtain a ‘virginity certificate’ for her niece although the girl protests she doesn’t want one.

The doctor boasts on tape that she has done hundreds of such tests, including on people under 18.

Doctors should report a child to social services or the police if they think he or she is ‘in need of protection’ under Swedish law.

Liesl Gerntholtz from Human Rights Watch told the Daily Mail: ‘In a country that internationally has played a leading role in protecting women’s human rights, it was almost unthinkable to me that this would be happening in a country like Sweden.’

Seriously, idc if anyone thinks virginity is important.

But I can't help but feel concern when they force anyone else to believe in it too, especially to their own children. 

It is a form of child abuse tbh.

This is why I detest organized religion. It makes people crazy.

I feel so bad for these girls.

The fact that their mothers are okay with this is even worse. Internalized misogyny, maybe? I've noticed a lot of religions put women down so that may have something to do with it.

Metro.co.uk .... I would take that with a grain of salt. We see one doctor that doesn't even seem to be Swedish, she could live there but she says "in my country, in Irak" she doesn't even speak Swedish to the patient, why? I don't like how such article generalised the whole Swedish medical system. I am sure you can find in any European countries and even in the US some doctors who would agree to practice such tests, you just need to find "the right" one who will accept, I don't get what the journalist was trying to say through that article?
