Supersonic 49,376
People don’t take hurricanes as seriously if they have a feminine name and the consequences are deadly, finds a new groundbreaking study.Female-named storms have historically killed more because people neither consider them as risky nor take the same precautions, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes.Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning 1950 and 2012. Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 deaths compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities. (The study excluded Katrina and Audrey, outlier storms that would skew the model). The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones.READ MORE: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/06/02/female-named-hurricanes-kill-more-than-male-because-people-dont-respect-them-study-finds/?postshare=641443878353858

JustPokeHerFace 2,564
Do people not understand that a hurricane doesn't actually have a gender, and that a category 5 will cause major destruction regardless of the name its assigned? I guess they don't judging by these statistics
craig 680
spanning 1950 and 2012.I heard this a few years ago and also the response - that they only started giving storms male names a few decades ago, so it likely just shows more deaths in the 50's-70's. Warholian 6,880
You do notice that probably the mass majority of hurricane names are going to be female? That's just totally common for almost anything other than people. Kevin Parker, Mac Demarco, Mark Ronson, and a stoned Lady Gaga. Need I say more?
