Lorde might be getting worse

I guess my major problem is that it feels like Lorde trying to be a popstar and fit in. Magnets doesn't feel genuine. Pure Heroine felt like Lorde being Lorde. Sorry if I sounded too harsh in the OP. :emma:

No, it's okay. I get what you mean. I think a lot of Lorde fans are scared that she might 'sell out' and abandon the things that made her debut so unique.

It's just that you have to keep in mind that this is a collaboration and, while she did cowrite the track, it's still a Disclosure song. If anything this video just proves how true of an artist Lorde still is because of how much depth she gives to the video.

I still stand by most of my statements tho.

1. Doesn't have that distinct Lorde touch lyrically or sonically

2. Doesn't feel genuine

3. Seems like Lorde trying to be just another popstar

4. Sounds like a 1989 song

In the biblical words of Beyonce...

Carry on. :trollga:

Some artists like to evolve or try new grounds once in a while. Also this is not her song, it's just like Foxes on Clarity and HAIM on Pray To God.

EDIT: The title says "Lorde might be getting worse". Do you think she was bad before Magnets?

"Lorde might be getting worse"

as in Pure Heroine will probably remain her best work and she will be going downhill after it if Magnets is any indication.

What's with the edit? The first paragraph answers your question with a no.

It's just one song. Where she's the featured artist.

Kinda hard to judge someone's progress based off that

I was just asking if you thought she was bad before Magnets because that's what I got from the title. Maybe there was something in between Magnets and the last single from Pure Heroine that made you feel that she was changing even before this single.

Oh no! Sorry, I thought you were trying to imply I didn't like Lorde to begin with and this thread was made by a hater to bash her. Magnets is the only thing I'm having a hard time grasping. Maybe it's really not as drastic of a shift as it seems to me. I'll admit I can sometimes get more meaning out of things than there actually is. You're probably right and I should look at this as more of a Disclosure song than a Lorde song. Again sorry.

Whispering

The thread title is confusing.

Isn't this song a collab? Why are you basing your opinion on her upcoming solo work on a single where she was a feature artist? Sorry, but that doesn't really make sense.

It's not even her song, it's featured on an album consisting of electronic music that is expected from Disclosure. The only thing you can really judge from this is her vocals if you're upset with the song.

I know what you mean. A lot of female artists go through this. It starts with the more revealing outfits, then they do a more commercial song and the next minute, they're just like everyone else. But you have to remember that it is a featured song from a dance group. Dance is slowly getting more experimental but it's still got a way to go and there's still plenty of generic stuff out there. When artists feature themselves on work by David Guetta, Calvin Harris and so on, it's never as good as their solo stuff. These dance producers are in it for the money and commercial appeal and they have to make music that appeals to that way of thinking. And they want big name artists on the tracks to make them sell. Hence, we get credible artists being generic for a short while. But yeah, some of this stuff is very weird to see of Lorde - wearing s-xier clothing, cavorting with a man old enough to be her dad (some of this looked like scene from 50 Shades) and singing a song produced by a dance group is all a bit freaky. But I say at this point, all we should really be wondering is whether she'll be more than a one hit wonder. Its been over 2 years since her debut, which she only had one worldwide hit from, and the album only really sold well in the US, NZ and Oz. If she can't get a solo hit from here on out, she'll be done.
