Warholian 6,880
Madonna should probably be put in the 90s while MJ should be in the 80s. Kurt Cobain may've inspired a generation of youth but his impact on 90s culture didn't even last half of the decade. Kevin Parker, Mac Demarco, Mark Ronson, and a stoned Lady Gaga. Need I say more? Americano 31,061
Duh. No one has exploded onto the scene and continued making headlines (since "Paparazzi" at VMA's to "Sound of Music" at Oscar's) like Gaga.

Kurt Cobain may've inspired a generation of youth but his impact on 90s culture didn't even last half of the decade. lol, what? Kurt and Nirvana helped define the alternative rock genre and evolved rock out of the 80s hair metal era. The cultural impact was huge and undeniable - it even influenced the fashion of the decade. Kurt/Nirvana are by far more synonymous with the 90s than Madonna.

The cultural impact was huge and undeniable - it even influenced the fashion of the decade. Kurt/Nirvana are by far more synonymous with the 90s than Madonna. The question was who the defining artist of the 1990s was. Nirvana, grunge culture, and grunge rock fell out of fashion by around 1995, while Madonna held onto the changing culture and embodied it. I'm not a fan of Madonna at all and I agree that Cobain redefined rock entirely as a genre but if you asked me who embodied the entire decade better I'd say Madonna. Kevin Parker, Mac Demarco, Mark Ronson, and a stoned Lady Gaga. Need I say more?
