The "Ellie Goulding Effect" in Pop Music

So, in the past few years, most fans of dance and electronic music know that Ellie Goulding has quickly become a big name in the music industry. One thing about her that has set her apart from others is her distinct voice, how it sounds, how she pronounces words, etc.

Nowadays it seems like the industry is looking for more and more girls who sort of sound like Ellie and even do music that's sort of like her style. The biggest example that comes to mind for me is the runner-up of the most recent season of American Idol, Jax:

Obviously she doesn't sound exactly like Ellie, but can you see the similarities, with how she pronounces her words when she sings.

Along with Ellie Goulding there's a lot of other girls who seem to be channeling not just Ellie but Lorde / Sia / like Daya and Halsey. Do you think this is the current trend the music industry is looking for in female pop singers in the wake of Sia's, Lorde's, and Ellie's success? Discuss.

maybe they don't do it purposely but subconciously, but I gotta agree....someone is famous and inspires others and those often try to make something similar.

just like many gaga fans who get creative and do something that is obviously inspired by gaga. doesn't mean it is bad but I just think it's lazy.

I don't see or hear Ellie in Sia, Lorde or Halsey. I don't think she's had much of an effect.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread. But I don't think she had an impact just cos of some girl on American Idol.

Ellie's impact :green:

Idk its weird. With Ellie, people either seem to LOVE her voice or HATE her voice. When I first listened to her back in 2011 or 2012 I really didn't like her voice but then I got used to it and loved it.

hop on that **** like a maniac

Not sure I agree with all the examples you've used in your OP, but honestly I don't think Ellie's voice is that distinctive and I think a lot of female singers have the same 'tone' to their voice as she does.

Your mildly condescending-sounding sarcasm aside, what I mean is the inflections these singers choose to place on their voices. Jax and Halsey aren't foreign, but what I'm saying is that Ellie, along with Sia and Lorde, seem like templates based on their voices that upcoming American artists want to try to imitate.

Also, the better trained your voice is, the less your normal accent is heard in your voice.

I once heard some girl featuring on a song who I swore up and down was Ellie Goulding. Turns out it was some random singer I've never heard of.

Ellie Goulding's breathy, kind of weak-sounding voice is very distinctive. I think a member here called it a lamb voice, and while that's pretty insulting it's also pretty accurate. I don't know if there's a wider trend of singers copying her since it's hard to copy the timbre of someone's voice, and that's what unique about Ellie. I don't think Sia or Lorde are influenced by her singing at all. Lorde might be influenced by Lana with regards to "let me sing very low even though this is not my range," but probably not.
