Sometimes, even if "you should have the right to do X" it doesn't profit you to exercise it if it will create more resentment and discomfort than that right if worth.

Because our happiness depends on others giving us things (friendshup, affection) that we don't have a strict right to claim.

So better to find some mutual accommodation that respects the feelings and needs of everyone.

But why should the minority have to accommodate for the respect and feelings of the majority when it's something that should be theirs by right? I mean, I understand the context in question, this is a school we're talking about, this situation is tricky, but I mean, if we don't start enforcing this sort of thing and educating the youth about it in schools, when do we start? In the office? In University?

No, because the right to marriage and equality are rights everyone should have, not just heteros-xuals. 

I get what you're saying but there's a point where you can't accommodate for someone who was "lucky" to be born their gender and identify as it if it means having to compromise on your own rights. if you identify as a girl, you should be treated as such, whether Britney feels comfortable with it or not.

are you TRYING to be offensive? first of all, she clearly identifies as a female so please refer to her as a "she". Second of all, those girls have probably seen a penis before, wether it's in real life or in pictures, what's the big deal if they accidentally see her's, if she still has one? If they are offended by her standing up when she's taking a piss they should really sort out their priorities.

That's what makes this particular situation tricky. Should someone with a penis be allowed to shower and use the same bathroom as female minors?

In a perfect world, the answer would be "yes, as long as they identify as female". In our world, it's up for debate.

Yes, if GM was a huge sticking point for gay acceptance that was fueling massive homophobia. Notice that gay marriage only became an issue several decades into the gay rights movement. First, for example, prohibitions on "sodomy" had to be ended, people had to see sympathetic gay characters on TV, same s-x public affection had to be partially normalized. 

Similarly, trans acceptance needs to be won before tangling with female fear of s-x crimes from penis-bearing humans invading their intimate spaces (fears common to radical feminists as well as prudish reactionaries). Especially with conservatives already trying to slander transwomen as creeps indulging a s-xual fetish.

If Lila really want to "feel more like one of the girls" (her stated reason for rejecting the teacher's bathroom), she needs to consider their feelings and not just her own rights.

I'm quite indifferent on this because I can definitely see her desires to be treated and have the same access to facilities as female students, but I can also understand how the open showers could be warranted as s-xual harassment should her penis be on display to other females (I don't actually know how showers etc work in the states as we don't have them over here). If this were an ordinary Australian high school I would be all for equal access because we don't have such issues of open showers etc. Tbh though, in regards to the normal female bathroom, they are all closed stalls right? What does it matter if she uses them? I think another article mentioned something about problems with "hearing her pee" or something along those lines and i'm ???? What's the difference between penis-urination and a urethra-urination? Especially when you can't even see it? It's a mere release of bodily fluid god dammit 

I do think that the other students seem to not be as educated in trans issues as one would like and I think there needs to be more awareness being taught in schools - although I'm pretty sure that s-xuality education/s-x ed is appalling in US High Schools so that thought might as well be thrown out the window

There's no formal education on other s-xualities or gender identities in the U.S. that I know of. I know I never had a lesson on it. Come to think of it, I've never had a lesson on safe s-x either. I'm glad the internet is our friend

Yeah, I did my major policy essay comparing Australia's comprehensive s-x ed to the US' abstinence only education last semester and I actually can't believe some of the stuff that's taught it baffles me. I read about teachers literally refusing to talk about LGBT+ even if someone asks a question on it and even sharing false statistics regarding contraception, and education really only focusing on Male/Female married couples. It's sad really, that so many students won't benefit from such education - hopefully it evolve soon though, it's literally dangerous.

tbh for using the bathroom there really is no problem at all. but for the locker room/shower it's more complex imo considering she is pre-op. it's definetely uncomfortable for some women to be showering and then suddenly see a penis. can you blame them?

Well I remember in boarding school that I never used the restrooms because boys would awkwardly stare at me. I always went in my dorm or used one of the teacher's, some of them were nice; I was the only example of a Transgender student.

I know it can be uncomfortable but Im sure this Transgirl wouldn't just undress and have her penis hanging out for all to see, why would she? When I got dressed in school I changed in a stall and we never got dirty enough to require use if the gym showers, or I didn't anyway. 

I will say that had they not known this girl is Trans it probably wouldn't be an issue since I use female restrooms in public and nobody says anything to me.

I think ignorance should be educated and people need to mind their own business.

Yes, this is who I wanna be. Guys don't mind if a nice, nude girl take a shower with them; they may even invite that. lol But on the other hand, girls don't want to see a penis dangling around in the shower, and they may complain of s-xual harassment. The U.S. high school showers mostly have open shower with no wall so you can see others' naked bodies. When a guy stand up to pee, there's a 2.5 feet drop so the pee noise is much louder than when a woman pee sitting down so some women don't like the pee noise that men make.
