PartySick 173,592
In the middle of last school year, Lila Perry came out as transgender. Before that, she had been living as a gay male. But that’s not who she really was. No longer was she going to pretend, Lila said.So this year, she told teachers and administrators at Hillsboro High School, where she is a senior, that she would no longer be content to use a unis-x faculty bathroom. She wanted to be treated like other female students, including access to bathrooms and locker rooms for girls. Her decision spread quickly through the small Jefferson County school district and, on Monday morning, students at Hillsboro High School walked out in protest. During the walkout, Lila was locked in the principal’s office. She said she and administrators worried about her safety. The student walkout came on the heels of a School Board meeting Thursday that drew a large crowd — parents concerned that Lila is getting special rights at the expense of other students. Most of the students at Monday’s protest were opposed to accommodations for her. A smaller group gathered in support.Continue reading~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Thoughts? Benji 20,113
Obviously she should be granted to use the facilities that she identifies with but I can understand the awkwardness surrounding it, it's a tricky subject when minors are involved.I hope she finds solace soon. RainingOnMe 7,280
This is terrible. When people say "we've really advanced with human equality" and you think about it, we haven't.
AbuHassan1992 766
This Britney Heimos woman is a moron. “I’m not comfortable with it,”, well, that's too bad, because nobody gives a **** if you're not comfortable with other people. It's like saying you don't want black people riding in the front of a bus becasue you're not "comfortable with it". complete bull****. “I’m not trying to be ignorant, but (the transgender student) is bringing it out in public for everybody else to deal with.” Bringing it out in public for everyone else to deal with? are you kidding me? You don't HAVE to deal with it because there's NOTHING to deal with. It's a girl wanting to use the girl's bathroom. If there's anything at all to deal with, it's her views on fellow human beings. Tropico 4,145
What a group of assholes. If she went in, did her business and left, why does it bother them? They need to stay in their lane. If they're willing to deprive themselves of valuable education time over a girl going to the correct bathroom, then they're taking education for granted. Let the girl do her thing and you do you. Why is that so hard for people to understand? You're seriously willing to leave school - do they even realize their parents pay school fees? - over this, you're problematic. theMonster5 74
It all depend if Lila still has a penis. If she still has a penis then he should use a gender-neutral locker room and bathroom. The girls don't want to accidently see his penis in the bathroom/locker rooom or watch/hear him stand up while peeing. He's only 17 so there's a great chance he still has a penis. Second of all, those girls have probably seen a penis before, wether it's in real life or in pictures, what's the big deal if they accidentally see her's, if she still has one? If they are offended by her standing up when she's taking a piss they should really sort out their priorities.where is the humanity
craig 680
As a guy, I don't care if women or transmen use my bathroom. But in a society where rape and s-xual harassment are issues, it's not surprising that some teen girls would be uncomfortable having a person with a penis in their bathroom and locker room. A person they've known as a boy for several years, Who am I as a guy to call them bigots for feeling uncomfortable? Lila had ther right to use the teacher's bathroom in private, which I consider fair accommodation.

I hope she finds solace soon. This. I'm curious as to whether she was bullied when she pretended to just be a gay male, or if this is strictly a transphobic issue. I am glad however there are people who support her though, even if it's the minority, it's good to know there are some supportive people there for her! "Lila said the school administration has been very supportive and is working to make her feel welcome. They have allowed her to use the facilities used by girls and women." Omg a school with intelligent human beings in charge Slay me with your forward thinking school administration! Life ain't Hollywood for any one of us. In any other case, I'd say Lila should be allowed to use the female restroom, but, seeing as she's still biologically male and the students are all minors...well, it's nice to say that she deserves to use the female facilities but, sadly, it's not always that easy. I'm very happy that the staff and the GSA are trying their best to help her feel accepted, though. It's a sign that things really are changing for the better, and hopefully someday this kind of thing won't need to be discussed. Chic 20,830
As a transgender student, I always used the nurse's unis-x bathroom, but then again I went out of my way to the school bathroom less than 20 times throughout all of high school, so...This isn't right though. It just isn't.
craig 680
Sometimes, even if "you should have the right to do X" it doesn't profit you to exercise it if it will create more resentment and discomfort than that right is worth.Because our happiness depends on others giving us things (friendship, affection) that we don't have a strict right to claim. So better to find some mutual accommodation that respects the feelings and needs of everyone.
