Mother Delivered Conjoined Twins but Only One Survived

Minnesota native Amber McCullough has just delivered conjoined twin girls which she has named Olivia and Hannah, at Children’s Hospital of Colorado, on Wednesday. Unfortunately, one of the twins did not survive the 5-hour surgery by a medical team trying to separate them.

According to a report from NBC, Amber McCullough gave birth to her two girls, Hannah and Olivia, at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado this Wednesday.

Minnesota woman have delivered her conjoined twin girls in Colorado, and as predicted by the doctors beforehand, only one infant survived in the long surgery to separate them.

When she found out she was carrying conjoined twins, McCullough said decided to have the babies despite the high risks and advice to terminate the pregnancy. Olivia was not expected to live, but Hannah was and she is now in critical condition.

The twins shared an abdomen, liver and intestinal tract.

Conjoined twins happen once every 200,000 live births, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, which says between 40 to 60 percent arrive stillborn.

“It’s pretty bad when you’re hoping to only grieve the loss of one child”, McCullough told KDVR in Denver.

McCullough wrote on Facebook about seeing her daughter’s ultrasounds “You can see Olivia embracing Hannah and even appears to kiss her on the cheek at times”. I am enjoying every kick, every picture, every smile…. even in utero these girls flood my heart with joy. McCullough KARE-TV in Minneapolis (http://kare11.tv/1IkwlUB) that Olivia only had a single ventricle in her heart and was missing valves. UMD statistics since 1950 have pointed out only one twin surviving the separation surgery – 75 percent of the time.

Hannah is expected to survive. “Nevertheless, she could be very important and really delicate”, McCullough wrote to the station. Furthermore, the surgical separation would be another life-threatening milestone that must be undergone by conjoined twins. So what I would like is to appeal to as many people public for prayer.

“I believe in the power of prayer and the talent of medical professionals here”, the mother said in a statement released by the hospital.

McCullough is a U.S. Army Reserves captain and has a six-year-old son named Tristan.
