*Developing story, I wrote report in the title for a reason*

An investigative blogger has accused Shaun King, a key figure in the Black Lives Matter movement, of misleading media icon Oprah Winfrey by pretending to be biracial in order to qualify for an “Oprah scholarship” to historically black Morehouse College. The blogger says King is white and has been lying about his ethnicity for years.

..

Yet, in recent weeks, rumours have been circulating about his ethnicity. A 1995 police incident report lists Shaun King’s ethnicity as white. And blogger Vicki Pate, who has been assembling forensic accounts of Shaun King’s background and family tree on her blog, “Re-NewsIt!,” has published her findings.

white people (mainly americans it seems) need to stop trying so hard and stop being so fvcking dumb, you're an example of white privilege and make me embarrassed to be white.

I also find this insulting to transgender people, because this whole trans/biracial sh!t is literally like they're making a mockery of trans people who don't identify as their assigned gender-

gender is a social construct, race is not.

It's honestly making my blood boil

What a mess :smh:

Rachel was at least working for a place that helps black lives, right? And this guy wanted to become black to get a free ride?

Miracle

In fact, biracial and people claiming their race freely should be a thing. I don't see how it differs from showing your gender. The thing is that they use the "biracial" / non identifying as their assigned race argument as a way to complain about transgender people and humilliating him instead of having a point. I still haven't seen anyone whose main reason to consider themselves to have as a different race to the one they were assigned is to empower their identity and be right about themselves but to insult and empower white supremacy

At first, when I did not stop to think about this transrace issue, I was quick to drag that Rachel woman but now I agree with you. People throw the "white people want to feel like a minority" card but if you translate it to the transgenders, men, before the transition, are also a privileged person "disguised" as an unprivileged person (women in this case) that, if they put on "men's clothes", they will come back to the privileged position.

Kinda off-topic but here in Brazil, you don't, you put what you identify with. There have been cases of identical twins that one was "white" and the other "black".

I don't even believe all this.

"And to question his race? Since the third grade, Shaun has had to deal with whispers as to his racial make-up. Whispers that no adult helped him deal with or process. Yes, that includes his mother.

Shaun got called "******" just as much, if not more, than myself or any of my black friends and family while growing up in Versailles. Do you think an 8 year old would volunteer for that type of treatment? A funny colored, wavy haired child just trying to navigate life? To have anything from racial slurs to cups full of dip-spit (chewing tobacco) hurled at you from confederate flag covered pick-up trucks? And then 20 years later have some right wing assholes question whether it ever happened and go as far as to call you a fraud and try to de-bunk years of social justice work that you've put under your belt?

We grew up in a town where white mothers were constantly dis-owned by their families for having relationships and making children with black fathers. Where even into the 2000's, the racial identities of mix-raced children were a taboo topic. Shaun was a direct victim of that. 20 years later, much progress has been made in my town of Versailles, but we are proving we have much further to go if people from my home town don't speak the **** up.

With all the blatant instances of racism still happening in 2015, imagine what it was like 20 years ago in a rural Kentucky town with a population of less than 8,000. Imagine how a high school and police department would handle a potential "hate crime".

If this happened in the age of the internet, the story would have spread like wildfire, but 20 years ago, the systematic conditions were in place to sweep Shaun and his situation under the rug.

During those 20 months that Shaun spent time recovering, I was a constant presence at his bedside. Directly following the altercation and many more times over the years, Shaun had numerous spinal surgeries and is still in pain EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE.

He's told his story countless times, but rarely comments on the amount of pain that he is in on a DAILY.

The extent that news media will go to in order to discredit a soldier that's dedicated his life to fighting injustice sickens me.

If anything, his entire life of dealing with this mess is the REASON he fights for injustice. Why are these idiots too blind to see that?

Piss off"

He didn't have a "meltdown", he was attacked and he addressed the lies in his tweets.

Why should we believe right wingers on this anyway? Glenn Beck? Breitbart? :wtf:

29. If you have known me from when I was in elementary school at Huntertown Elementary until now, you've known me as black or bi-racial.

30. I did not concoct a lie about my race to get into @Morehouse.

I did not concoct a lie about my race to get an @Oprah scholarship.

33. Not only that, but the truth is that @glennbeck & @theblaze & Breitbart DON'T GIVE A **** about my race. They just want me to shut up.

Good to know. I was skeptical as well. I doubt that you get the Oprah scholarship when you can't prove that you have black ancestors or are black :smh:
