Germany taking now 800.000 refugees

"Berlin has said it expects to receive a record 800,000 asylum seekers this year, more than the entire EU combined in 2014, laying bare the scale of the biggest refugee crisis to face the continent since the second world war.

If the latest official projection released on Wednesday is borne out, it would be nearly twice as high as Germany’s previous record for asylum claims, set during the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992.

Interior minister Thomas de Maizière warned that the Schengen zone, which allows passport-free travel across much of mainland Europe, could not be maintained unless EU states agreed to share asylum seekers.

The 800,000 figure — which represents about 1 per cent of Germany’s population and is a sharp increase on an earlier estimate of 450,000 — is one of the starkest signs yet of the extent of the migrant crisis facing Europe, as thousands of refugees fleeing war in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan and poverty in Africa stream into the continent.

Chancellor Angela Merkel told German television on Sunday that the refugee crisis “will concern us far more than Greece and the stability of the euro”.

Mr de Maizière said: “Germany cannot bear the strain if, as has been the case, around 40 per cent of all asylum seekers to Europe come here. The reform of the Dublin system into fair European burden-sharing with fixed quotas must be pushed forward.”

EU plans to share out up to 40,000 asylum seekers collapsed this summer in the face of stiff opposition from eastern EU states.

Regional governments in Germany are pushing for more federal funding and faster processing of claims, which would cut the time refugees need to be held in temporary accommodation.

Authorities across Germany have used a concert hall and even the VIP area of Munich’s Olympic stadium as emergency shelters.

Civil servants have been seconded from other roles 50 customs officials were drafted in from the finance ministry this week — or called out of retirement to help process applications. "

I think it's great tbh! I mean those are really people who need help. But I understand that Germany and Austria can not take all of them, for example Switzerland doesn't take any, so there's a problem.

My heart really weeps for all these people that lost everything in the blink of a second. The world around is getting torn apart and there are still the people that think that the problem is who owns money to whom in a rotten Union that tries to ignore the world around them so that the rich can keep the poor even more back behind in chances to leave a life with dignity and quality. I'm glad that at least these 800k people will have a chance for a new home even that far away from their real one.

It's a shame for UK and France not taking a lot refugees.

I'm so proud of my country helping so many people.

It's a big change for our society and a lot of people may not be satisfied bc they have to change some habits but it's time to drop this selfish attitude.

Yes and it makes me happy.

We have so many refugees here because they use us as a bridge to enter the rest of Europe and we can't really do much about them, I mean at our current state we can;t save our own people.  Still we gave them some big ships to stay inside and stuff (idk for how long though)...

Economy

these are the seekers though it does not mean Germany will take them all

adding 1% of your population each year on immigration alone (regardless of whether its refugees or not) does put strain on infrastructure

I know cause here in Canada in the 1990s we were adding like 1.3% of our pop a year on immigration alone plus whatever natural growth there was

its too much strain on infrastructure u just cant take in that many a year

We will see in 20 years when you will be obliged to wear burqa. You people just don't get it right? You think that this is so cool an Europeans are showing the world how carrying they are.. Bullsh*t! These people have different culture, different habits, different religion and they are UNABLE to integrate. By supporting this madness, you support basically the end of the European civilization as we know it.
