Stolen Ashley Madison user data published by hackers

Hackers who hit cheaters' dating site, Ashley Madison, published stolen customer data, experts said Tuesday.

The data is posted on what is known as the "dark web," a part of the Internet that can't be searched by Google or most common search engines. It also can only be viewed with a special Tor browser, according to Per Thorsheim, a cybersecurity expert in Norway. The information that was posted included customer names and credit card numbers, Thorsheim said. The amount of money they spent on the site was also posted.

The site, which is owned by Avid Life Media, is designed to help married people cheat on their spouses. Its slogan is ,"Life is short. Have an affair."

It said it's actively monitoring this situation and working with law enforcement in the United States and in Canada, where the site is based.

"This event is not an act of hacktivism, it is an act of criminality. It is an illegal action against the individual members of AshleyMadison.com," the site said. "The criminal, or criminals, involved in this act have appointed themselves as the moral judge, juror, and executioner, seeing fit to impose a personal notion of virtue on all of society."

The hack attack was first revealed a month ago. At that time hackers who called themselves the "Impact Team," said they would release "profiles with all the customers' secret s-xual fantasies and matching credit card transactions, real names and addresses, and employee documents and emails," if the site was not shut down. Samples of the stolen data were published at that time, according to the hackers.

The hackers posted a statement Tuesday under the headline "Time's Up!" announcing the posting of the data and giving directions to view the data.

"Avid Life Media has failed to take down Ashley Madison," said the statement. "We have explained the fraud, deceit, and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data."

The hackers mocked the site and the customer base, saying that 90% to 95% of the users were male.

"Find someone you know in here? Keep in mind the site is a scam with thousands of fake female profiles," said the post. "Chances are your man signed up on the world's biggest affair site, but never had one. He just tried to. If that distinction matters."

I wonder if some members that paid for that option will sue AM since AM did not kept their promise by wiping off their data.

But if you're on a site to cheat on them your relationship must not mean much anyway so I'd rather sue and win the case and leave with my money than stay with a person I obviously don't love lol.

The only time I would praise hacking, however, posting the users personal data including their home address (I believe it said that anyway) is really bad. Because duh, if they're married, their spouse and possibly children, are living with them. That means the security of that entire household is now in danger. I was one of the worst people to have read this because I was really scared my dad was cheating last year and was obessively checking sites including Ashley Madison to see if he was there (thank goodness you can't research most of them without having an account, which I certainly wasn't going to do, so that barrier helped me get over it). Just as well I never joined this one. Thankfully, most of these sites are ones you pay for, some of them mega expensive and my dad's such a cheapskate and we're not rich that I doubt he'd fork out for this. But I still became concerned that he could be there and now our home and overall security is in danger. But I'm trying to be realistic seeing as only 1.2 million of its apparently 37 million users are from the UK, so the chances of him being there are slim.

I heard that the site apparently charges you £20 to remove your information from the database if you want to delete your account, which is ample reason to not sign up. But now hearing that they obviously failed to do this despite charging customers has really put this site in deep water. The case hit the news in the UK as one of our members of parliament was outed as being on there and she claimed that it was because she had an old email address that had clearly been harvested by a hacker and they had made an account under her name on the site using the address because unlike most sign-ups, you don't need to reply to a verification email, so you could use anyone's email, not your own (yet another reason the site effed up majorly with security protocol). But yeah, nobody bought that excuse for a second. I bet a lot of sheepish men made this same excuse to their wives that night. But hearing that 90-95% of the members are male was a real laugh. As was the hackers saying that "chances are, he didn't have an affair, he just tried to." Hopefully, outing the site as a scam will discourage more people from using similar sites considering that almost all of them are scams. So many men have said that minutes after creating a profile with nothing on it but name, age and location with no photo, hobbies or preferences, within minutes, lots of attractive women wanted to chat. So, in order to converse with other members, they had to pay, so they signed up for the paid subscription,,,at which point, every single woman scarpered, and they've not had one piece of action since they joined. As if they needed to find that out. These sites have been a scam since day one.

So, yeah, don't cheat, folks. It'll end in tears in more ways than you know.

I feel no sympathy for the cheaters, but I do feel bad for their spouses. Now there is no way for them to handle their issues privately, so even the innocent ones have their personal lives put on blast. 

If my husband was cheating on me I would want to know, but I wouldn't want it to be broadcast to the rest of the world too.

If you can't be honest you shouldn't be in a relationship period. Even open relationships don't condone going behind your partner's back and being dishonest. 

Different strokes for different folks, but all the folks involved need to know what/where you're stroking.

There are a lot of old marriages where the partners aren't meeting each other's s-xual , romantic, and emotional needs very well, but it still makes sense to stay together for the sake of the children and household stability. Divorce is expense and messy.

Maybe the wife meets her needs by having her own hobbies and her own close female friends and reading romance novels. But the guy still craves a bit more s-xually ... and you could ask, is the wife really losing that much if he cheats as opposed to spending that time playing golf, watching sports, drinking with the guys.
