During a performance on Friday's episode of NBC's Today show, black singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe was apparently cut off after she began to dedicate a song to victims of police brutality.

VH1 reports Monáe was delivering her new song "Hell You Talmbout," which the Verge describes as "both a protest song and a tribute; a call to arms and a forceful reminder of the tragic, tangible consequences of police brutality," before the feed rapidly switched to commercials.

Unfortunate event either way.

But not the first time for.media to.so this.

In the end the TV station didn't want to be part of this, and maybe that is why they cut it off.

uhh... i mean it to me just looks like the alice cooper performance on fox news. they let you sing one song and then have to go to commercial.  the entire song is a protest isnt it, if they didnt want the message to get out they maybe wouldnt have allowed the song to be performed in the first place?

:emma: w/e interpret it however you want i guess

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Does anyone watch Good Morning America often? I feel like they cut off all the artists when they do outside performances because they need commercial breaks. The performer keeps entertaining the audience during the commercial breaks.

but I'm not 100% sure

That ending where she jumps though; conviction. Good for her for using that as a platform to speak about what matters, I need to get into her quick

They spoke over her though and then left it silent so it looks intentional on their behalf unfortunately

"black singer-songwriter" why not just singer-songwriter? Why do headlines still need to mention people's races? It is truly unfair that she got cut off, I hope it gets more attention now.

Pink flamingos always fascinated me.

I am not sure what their intention behind this was, if it was just to stay on their time-slot with commercials then fine who cares. If it was to cut her speech for political reasons then its not logical, more people know about and heard it now than if they didn't cut it.

But sle Janelle, queeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

If any of you have watched various artists' performances on Good Morning America you would know that their performances are almost always cut off directly at the end for commercial breaks. This is once again other media outlets trying to make something out of nothing...Janelle had 7 full minutes of air time, it's not surprised that they were in a hurry to cut to commercial to stay on schedule. And they also didn't "mute" her audio, you can clearly still hear Janelle talking in the background.

Youtube some of Lady Gaga's performances...They would cut her off while she was mid-song. The thread title is very presumptive and quite dramatic to be honest...

Thank you for confirming, I casually watch tv so I wasn't sure.

I think this shows how manipulative different news sources can turn a story into something that it isn't. Shame on the media tbh :neyde:

Whispering

The morning shows always do this, cut away to go to commercial break, even cutting performances before they are done.

NBC is part of network news in the U.S. and that slants more liberal. They don't shy away or try to repress discussions on racial issues.

This is silly! Trying to make something out of nothing!
