I don't even know what she means. I mean, that basically implies she doesn't consider herself a good pop singer. Maybe she's just referring to Interscope editing the **** out of her voice on all her pop records so far. She mentioned that her voice was too theatrical for pop too, according to those musical school b---hes.

She can believe she is better at Jazz but still believe her pop is of good standard. It's not like she's good at one and s--t at another. So I don't think she meant she "doesn't consider herself a good pop singer".

These statements are always kinda funny to me.   I'm sure I'm not the only one, but if she would have entered the industry as the next "Norah Jones" I would have probably been a fan since day one, instead of having to get past all the stuff around her to find out she was a truly remarkable singer.

Whether or not she agrees with that is totally open for debate, but it's still odd to me how she seems to confirm and accept the idea that her pop voice wasn't anything special. "But I assure you".

The truth is, neither of us can possibly be sure. But taking all her previous comments over the past two years into account, I think it's fairly certain that she thinks of her (recorded) own vocals pre-2014 as terrible. Not based on talent, but based on the fact that her voice had to be edited to sound differently.

I really hope this is a misinterpretation of her comment. Both sides make sense to me; unfortunately, this one makes a little more sense fully considering the context. I'd just rather not believe that she considers herself to be anything less than a great pop singer, because she really has added something special to the genre, voice editing or not. I'd almost prefer if she were arrogant about her talents as a pop singer/songwriter (not that she said anything here about songwriting, but still).

Maybe it's not her accepting the notion as much as her thinking the audience might believe it... Yeah, that made more sense in my head...

Come to think of it, this seems weirdly insecure for her to even bring up - if people are interested enough to buy tickets, then either 1) they already know she's good at jazz & like the pairing of her + Tony, or 2) they'll find out she's talented when she sings anyway, so there's really no need for reassurance...??

That's my perspective. I'm one hundred percent sure that she's capable of sounding just as brilliant if she covered a few pop classics as well. The only unconfirmed current left is whether she's musically built for creating Jazz music that will meet a higher form of acclaim than her pop music and therefore fully stand by the statement she made.

The artists who perform selections from "the Great American Songbook" didn't write the songs they sang. That list included Sinatra, Martin, Holiday, Fitzgerald, Clooney, Crosby and Bennett. They sang from the catalogue of music that was comprised of songs written by the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, and more. 

Plus, Gaga was referring to her vocals with that statement, not her songwriting.

Pop music is not very melodic unless it's a good pop ballad. A voice doesn't really shine in pop music. Thats why a lot of pop singers have a very limited vocal range and are still very popular. There are a couple of singers i think are wasting there time with pop or have wasted there time with pop.

Mariah Carey

Lady Gaga

Whitney Houston

Deborah Cox

These singers shine when they have a beautiful ballad to sing. One where their voice is the showcase and not the bells and whistles that go with pop music. These singers should take a page from Lady Gaga's hand book and explore other types of music and then put out the contractually obligated pop album. Not necessarily standards Jazz, but something where their voice is the focal point. I love a good pop song but pop doesn't do anything for a truly talented singer.  I don't think Lady Gaga is saying her voice is bad in pop. I think she is saying she can't really use pop as a showcase for her voice.
