Did the Applause VMA performance lack substance?

I'm pretty sure that's not true. From memory Gaga wanted multiple dopplegangers to walk the red carpet in many of her iconic looks. She said so herself.I don't know where the gore part is coming from :duck:

Yeah she wanted that on the red carpet but there was a performance that mtv didnt want her to do.

with her idea to have dopplegangers walking the red carpet it kinda sounds like what sia would do now lol.

I was watching an audience view of that performance the other day and it looked 10x more iconic than usual:

Definitely not. She DID tell a story. She recreated her career in a couple of minutes and reminded everyone that Lady Gaga is back. Their backlash didn't stop her. Tye costume changes added to it. And then on top of that she put in a great dance routine and made an effort vocally. I loved it.

if it wasn't for troy carter i think Gaga really could have touched more on the "art" side of things.... I'm glad Gaga has seemed to move past it. I know it must have hurt to have her vision rejected

It's a cute performance, but yeah I do think that it wasn't that great. I blame MTV.

Compared to the other performances (ala Miley Cyrus) it was the best performance of the night. I liked it though. It was like an evolution of her.

I think that since MTV didn't allow her to do her entrance and her performance the way she wanted, she opted to use the entrance concept for the performance.

I do agree it was too early for her to do that, but I feel the performance was intended to be an a--lysis or meditation about her career after her blackout and before her comeback.

The lack of substance was because MTV threw out the original concept because they didn't want Gaga stealing Miley's spotlight.

It's sad that she was forbidden to shine with a good performance so Miley could shine with a bad one.

The original concept was divine however I still believe that watered down version was still great. From birth to resurrection it was very deep actually.

But that was the whole point- showing how she reinvents every album cycle, showing you what goes on behind the curtains by doing onstage costume changes, reflecting on her career so far

And to be fair, her original planned was scrapped and her and Troy were falling apart if not seperated already

The only good part was the introduction, and it went downhill from there. Never liked that performance, it felt like a cheap knock off of gaga with all the changes and her vocals weren't as good as usual... quite a few of the performances from the ARTPOP era felt this way, nothing against gaga considering what was going on at the time... but when you compare her 2009 & even 2010 vma performances to 2013 :miley:

I don't say this in a hateful way by the way, I feel like as fans we have a right to critic her performances and talk about those we like/dislike.
