if a way of hunting animals without inhumanely harming them exists then i would agree to it, it's the idea that they're in unbearable pain that concerns me, after all as humans we don't particularly enjoy pain now do we (unless you're into BDSM obviously) besides, it's up to us as individuals as to what we want to eat when it comes to food, I find Vegans to be food nazis sometimes tbh acting as if animals > humans when it's deffo not that lol

Don't necessarily agree or disagree, but I see your point

Though the "it's up to us as individuals" argument cuts both ways. That's the main argument to defend animal hunting for sport. Which is why I'm not extremely against it. The pain element is horrifying but in the end the animal's gone and I think it's idiotic to keep focussing on the cruelty of an animal dying when the animal in question can't even feel or remember it anymore. It's a bit weak and sentimental in my opinion.

That doesn't mean I am pro hunting or something. I just don't really think you can come up with good arguments in general to defend or reject things like hunting or killing or whatever. Animals kill all the time and often in cruel ways. The popular argument is that humans should do better, but again, it's quite difficult to find a good argument for that. I don't know, I'm confusing myself now.. I guess it's just not so clear-cut for me. And mind you, I actually have pets :air:

Only a tiny portion of the meat normal people consume. And there are protein in like a ton of non-meat products, don't even :rip: And if it's only the humane element you care about, then do you agree with humane hunting for sport if the animal doesn't suffer? If you don't, then you're gonna have difficulty coming up with a good defense.

I'm more interested in picking my battles and dealing with issues in a pragmatic way. It's great to be vegetarian or vegan if one chooses to live that way, but we can't force people to follow a diet, especially since we're omnivores and nature gave us the teeth and digestive system to be able to eat meat, produce, and other edible sources.

I feel that tackling the hunting for game could gain traction since it is one of the reasons the gun industry is so strong in the Western world. Thus, if people who are for stronger gun laws would tackle issues like these, one at a time, instead of raising bigger or new issues, people who have something to gain depending on their stance would be more apt to join a cause and actually come up with viable solutions rather than blowing smoke whenever incidents like these get major press.

Stand in the light, cast your shadow.

By the way I just saw this post on Reddit and it makes a A LOT of sense...

"

I have a friend who works in cheetah conservation in Namibia and is understandably really upset about this... but optimistic because she hopes that it'll teach a few people more about how poaching works in Africa. A few points from her on this:

Bow hunting is basically the choice these days by poachers in her neck of the woods in Africa because a gunshot can be heard from much further away, but a bow is silent. So while the American guy's defense will be "I had a permit, I assumed everything was done correctly!", well that makes little sense. He likely knew what was up, but how they had to be quiet about it.

Killing lions like this in Africa is doubly bad because while there are always excess males due to pride structure, hunters always want the best specimens. As such, weaker male lions get to mate who otherwise wouldn't (as the best ones/ their offspring are killed), overall diluting the gene pool.

The reason it took 40 hours to kill Cecil is because after they shot him it was a bit late, so they went to bed to go track him further in the morning, leaving the animal in pain. Disgusting people.

Finally, I feel obliged to mention that there is a lot of good hunting in Africa one can do that really helps the locals and that they love. There are literally millions of antelope in Africa that are not endangered, and you can't carry the meat over borders, so bonus for the local villages where they can't afford meat and it gets donated! So you have to be fairly ****ed up to decide you want an endangered species instead.

I also confess my initial reaction is a twinge at the witch hunt this has become... but then I remember seeing the mess this sociopath's life currently is may well deter others who think hunting a lion sounds like fun.   "

Well, if you can't force people to follow a diet (simply because people like to eat meat and don't care if they need it or not) then how are you gonna ban a hobby that is based on the exact same principle? :emma: Just trying to open up the discussion here. Is there even a difference between the two? Except that in the latter case you have the balls to actually face the animal you're killing for no real reason.

Agreed with your second paragraph though :applause:

For sport, I would be on board. But I have seen decent arguments for hunting to regulate an overcrowding population which can cause road accidents (and death in some cases) and loss of crops or livestock. There are some very poor farmers where I live who have small farms out in very rural, undeveloped areas that have difficulties with rabbits, bears (rarely), coyotes, birds, and deer. They've own their land for generations and, like many other hunters I know, make good use of the meat, bones, and hides. However killing for sport is purely an ego driven thing and I find the methods used often very "unfair." Hunting for sport is very big where I live, unfortunately. A lot of my kin hunt, but most of them have a level of respect for the animal they hunt, and wouldn't dream of going after an endangered animal. They hunt for the reasons above, they are farmers or rural living types who are trying to keep a balance going. My paternal grandfather owns three large properties, heavily forested, but keeps a small farm on one. For the most part he leaves the animals alone because he LIKES having a heavy woodland critter population. He loves to hear the sounds they make during the day/evening and he loves watching them. He even leaves food out sometimes (not on the farm though). My dad is the same way. He has hunted many times, but one of the things he loves most about being outdoors is the wildlife and would rather be part of the ecosystem. He has no need for a "thrill kill."

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

How is meat a necessity for humans when millions of vegetarians are living a healthy life?

I live in the south... prior to the end of the civil war our region relied on slavery to survive, but guess what, we got over it... They can do the same. Not a good excuse to justify the killing of non-traditional game.

I'm not saying hunt leopards and rhinos, don't misunderstand.

Is America a developing country?

Do ya'll rely on tourism?

Do you watch the price of doritos soar every month?

Do NOT say an entire CONTINENT with a HISTORY of being the very VICTIMS of the slavery YOUR COUNTRY imposed needs to "get over it".

no.

No.

NO.

That is not how it works. You do not get to pull the slavery card on us. You do NOT.

Life ain't Hollywood for any one of us.

hunting endangered animals of course should be outlawed but i'm not sure about sport hunting non endangered animals i mean i'd have to see where the money from it goes to determine whether its more good or bad.

and i eat meat for enjoyment. i could go vegan quite easily but i choose not to because i enjoy the taste of meat. that poor chicken lived in horrific conditions for all its life just so i could get my 30 minutes of pleasure from eating it so honestly i'm not all that much better than these hunters.

posted this in the other thread and will watch louis theroux's documentary on it later

"Louis Theroux journeys to the centre of the controversial South African hunting industry. It's big business, attracting thousands of holiday hunters annually. Keeping wild animals fenced in on farms has made it cheaper and easier to hunt than ever before, but Louis discovers that this industry, instead of endangering species, has actually increased animal numbers. Staying at a safari hunting lodge, Louis hears that each kill has a price. The potential shopping list is endless, ranging from $250 for a porcupine to $100,000 for a rhino. It's a hunter's paradise."

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

My grandparents live outside the city, somewhere up in the mountains. Everyone there has animals that they take care of. Whenever Winter arrives, wolves start to invade the village because they need to find something to eat. Then, and only then, I am okay with men killing an animal.

Hunters are not endangered, Most hobby hunters have a supermarket around the corner. People who kill for fun make me sick. I never understood the appeal of having a dead animal head in your living room. So yes, hunting for sport should be illegal.

I don't think some of you read the title.

They aren't asking if hunting for food/to control overpopulated species should be outlawed. They're asking if hunting for nothing more than your own sick pleasure should be outlawed.

Which in that case, yes. I feel like a lot of people don't realize just how important each animal that is hunted for sport is. Be it lions, gorillas, tigers (what hasn't been hunted for sport this day in age?) they're all a part of the ecosystem they live in. And once that species is gone, others overpopulate, die out, ect.

Hunting a gorilla does nothing, hunting tigers does nothing. Elephants, lions...again, no gain from it. I think it's so off how people who are for it go "but what about the first peopole!! they hunted!!" Uhm yeah. They hunted. So they could eat it....so they could use it's fur for clothing, skin for leather...like...do you not understand the difference between hunting as a sport and actual hunting? Clearly not :rip:

Having some compassion for animals being killed just to be hung on walls doesn't make you some *** or crybaby. I mean, we all talk about how bad sport hunting is yet we wait until the very last minute to do anything.

Take the last Northern White rhino. It's the last male in the wilderness. It's being protected by soldiers 24/7 with guns. Which, it's nice that they're doing that but the fact it took us that long to do anything about it is sad.

I just don't understand why people don't appreciate animals like they do human life. Each animal plays a key role and whether you like it or not, every new extinct animal will impact out lives; be in in a few years or a few centuries.

Not saying you should love animals, but everyone needs to at least respect them. They're living, breathing creatures too y'know :P

Whispering

I'd like to see all these outraged people being vegetarians btw. I mean, the rage over this animal seems very out of proportion compared to the non-reaction about the millions of animals getting killed every single day so you can buy your meat in your grocery store. It's annoying me.

The question was about hunting for sport, not hunting to put food on the table. These people that go out and hunt for lions aren't eating them. They are wanting a trophy on their wall.

I still don't see the difference with killing an animal because you want to eat meat (which you don't physically need) and killing an animal because you want something else to enrich your ego somehow. I genuinely don't think there's a major difference, except that hunting actually requires more effort than buying prepackaged/prepared meat around the corner.

Again: not defending hunting for sport, just expressing my annoyance at people not being able to see how their outrage because of this seems a bit hypocritical. Not off-topic in my opinion.

I feel like nobody understands the difference between hunting to use the animal for food and then just going and hunting just to kill :smh: like, is this really such a hard concept?

People who use the "love to see you be a vegetarian then" are missing the point entirely.

No shade to didy, just in general

ok one more thing

the cecil thing was poaching

the thread is about hunting for sport

last i checked theres a difference because poachers dont give a **** about whether an animal is endangered or not, they just kill. poachers are  the reason animals go endangered

if an animal that is hunted for sport goes endangered then they can no longer hunt that animal and they no longer gain any money from it and it defeats the purpose to let an animal go endangered. hunting endangered species is not allowed for sport hunters.

if you do hunt an animal that is endangered then it is no longer sport hunting, its poaching (hunting an animal illegally)

random video i found :laughga:

feel kinda sorry for louis tho :deadbanana:
