Obama Administration guarantees free birth control for female employees

The Obama administration on Friday issued its final rules for employers who morally object to covering birth control in their health insurance plans. The accommodation ensures that all employed women, unless they work for a place of worship, will still have their birth control covered at no cost to them, even if their employers refuse to cover it.

Under the new rule, a closely held for-profit company that objects to covering contraception in its health plan can write a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services stating its objection. HHS will then notify a third-party insurer of the company's objection, and the insurer will provide birth control coverage to the company's female employees at no additional cost to the company.

“Women across the country should have access to preventive services, including contraception,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a statement. “At the same time, we recognize the deeply held views on these issues, and we are committed to securing women’s access to important preventive services at no additional cost under the Affordable Care Act, while respecting religious beliefs.”

The Affordable Care Act, as originally written, required all employers except for places of worship to cover the full range of contraception, including intrauterine devices and the morning-after pill, in their insurance plans at no out-of-pocket cost to women. Since the law went into effect in 2012, it hassaved women $1.4 billion on birth control pills.

Because this is a better long term outcome. It puts the responsibility in the hands of the people who tend to be more reliable and responsible. Birth control left up to males isn't the best choice of the two options.

I don't agree with this, the public shouldn't be paying for abortion. I hope there are religious exemptions.

It's contraceptives, not abortions. Religious institutions don't have to provide their employess with them. Employers who feel it goes against their personal beliefs will report that to the Department of Health and they will provide the woman with them from a third party.

They would rather pay for birth control than a pregnancy, childbirth and 26 more years of healthcare for that child. Think of how much smarter that is! Much more cost effective, for sure!

oh thats probably why then. Here in Canada most insurance companies do not cover children past 19. Some until 22. And of course since doctor visits, tests and surgeries are free, insurance only has to cover the rest

 

but yeah we generally dont get birth control covered :(

Canada isnt the best example of a free healthcare system because a lot isnt free, Scandinavian Countries are a better exame. In fact in the US healthcare is 50% Government funded/subsidized and in Canada its 70%. The difference isnt that huge...

- Family Doctor Visits

- Tests (ex: MRIs, Ultrasounds, Cat Scans, x-rays etc etc etc)

- Vaccinations that are mandatory (flu shot is free but not mandatory)

- Surgeries

- most specialists

 

NOT FREE OR COVERED BY GOVERNMENT

 

- Dental Care (its 100% privatized)

- Most medications (unless its essential and you cant afford it)

- Non-mandatory vaccinations (flu shot is only exeption)

- A few specialists arent covered such as eye doctor (unless your 12 and under or 65 and over)

- Unnecessairy Cosmetic Surgeries (i agree it shouldnt be covered)
