I don't know why he's acting like this was so hard for him. He's a Youtuber, there are SO many gay ones, no one really cares anymore. The thing that gets me most is how he thought poking fun at being gay a few years back was entertainment. He's was a responsible adult

:saladga:

The lack of empathy on this site is intense and nauseating.

If you don't know why it was hard for Shane Dawson to "come out" you didn't actually take the time to listen to his story. There is no way an intelligent person could listen to his testament and not immediately understand why this has been difficult for him, and since I'm sure you are an intelligent person…let's break it down.

Some people are born physically and mentally healthy into loving families. Those people grow up and realize their s-xuality is not considered normal. Those people accept it, "come out", and move on. A lot of people are not that lucky, Shane was not that lucky.

As a child Shane was confused about his s-xual attraction toward both men and women. When you combine that childhood confusion with his abusive and religious living environment it's no wonder a deep seeded negative image of himself was created. (Foreshadowing, he literally wrote a book called I Hate Myself.)

His emotional issues had physical implications, and he became morbidly obese. Obesity had the added effect of deepening his insecurities and self-hatred. He lost the weight, and became a youtuber.

As a youtuber he became a public figure, which meant strangers were bound to scrutinized his effeminate nature. So, rather then wait to be made fun of, he made the gay-jokes first. His self-depricating sense of humor took the power out of the hands of the bullies. He made it so that other people couldn't make fun of him better then he could make fun of himself.

After years of self-deprecating gay jokes and genuine confusion, his therapist helped him understand his s-xuality. For the first time, well into his 20's, he was able to make sense of his s-xual attractions.

He decided to "come out" and tell his story. That is why we are celebrating his bravery; because he managed to break free of the chains of self-hatred. You really can't relate to that on some level, or at the very least understand it?

I don't know where people people get the idea that being a being a public figure, or even just being an adult, means you suddenly have clarity over all aspects of your life. Everyone is on the road to self-discovery, who the **** are you to judge the bumps on someone else's road?

This forum is really interesting. Some people who are full of acceptance literally write novels full of positive messages and then there are some who are like: "lol u gay hunty but whateves" which is kinda ironic since most of the people here are part of LGBT who are supposed to be accepting and supportive?

Some of Shane's videos are very transphobic and racist. Which is damaging to the trans/poc lgbt+ audience that watches his videos. He even defended the videos and just labelled it "dark humour"  "like joan rivers".

He should actually formally apologise for those videos, until he does I won't forgive him. Knowing that he was bis-xual and using the gay community as niche humour in his videos is pretty gross tbh. He should be ashamed, but he isn't

He was making fun of lgbt people so many times. Good for him, it's always good to be yourself at least a bit.

It is dark humor and some people find it funny. He doesn't have to apologise for anything.

Seeing threads about YouTubers coming out kinda scares me, and judging by some responses here I had reason to be :emma:

Okay he's a bit flamboyant and whatever and you may have suspected him of not being straight before, but no you didn't KNOW, nobody knows except the person themselves, and even in that case sometimes they don't know for certain either and after some time they come to an actual and more permanent realisation. It's s-xuality at the end of the day, it's not as simple as black and white and there will never be enough labels for the multitude of situations that go on.

Good on him for being comfortable enough to come out now, it does take strength and bravery :applause: Even if he's surrounded by a billion gay people, that doesn't make his situation any less important. We aren't him, we aren't in his shoes, so let's not put down someone else's struggle just because we may percieve their life as somehow being easier when we definitely don't know for certain

I've been watching him since like 2008 and I'm proud of him for coming out. This was obviously really difficult for him :applause:
