Do you think Tony puts down Gaga's pop music?

Clearly a man of his age and taste isn't going to listen to Pop music by Britney Spears all day long.

(Bet he'd like Lana, though.)

I don't necessarily think Tony's putting down Gaga's music.  Tony is simply explaining how Gaga's talent can be showcased in its full glory when she sings jazz songs that show off her powerful and melodic vocals.

BTW, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a man who is almost 89 years old isn't too fond of Pop music.

At the end of the day, though, I believe Tony respects Gaga for her songwriting and vocal talent.

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

that's an awful thing to say about us and for Gaga to hear.

mte, Except Some of us are kind of teeny boppers (like me) so it's not really a bad thing.

"puts down"...?

It's not about that really...he's a 88 years old male who dedicated his whole life to singing jazz...is it really that surprising that he's not into pop music?

Other than that, I think Tony really appreciates Gaga and her voice, and that their relationship is of genuine friendship. That's what matters...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I don't think the problem is that he's not into it as much as it is that he implies Gaga is wasting her time with it and doesn't respect it. You should respect all music genres even if u don't like them.

But I don't think he ever intended to disrespect her or her songwriting...

The only time I remember him commenting anything was when he said - and I'm paraphrasing - that she was now singing "quality music"...which is to say that to his personal taste jazz as a genre is more interesting than pop - he's 88, it's only natural.

It's a valid opinion that many ppl would condone. To me it was a perfectly innocuous comment and I don't see how having a preference and being open about it is offensive...

But saying she's now singing quality music is heavily implying what she was singing before wasnt quality. He can think that but he really shouldn't imply that in an interview imo.

I think you guys are just reading too much into it :P

It was ages ago anyway and if Gaga herself is not offended...

I'm not really offended, I'm just saying I can see why some would think he's putting it down. Also, Gaga could be offended. I remember an interview where he said "I'm pushing her toward quality" and Gaga made somewhat of a sad face. But even if she's not, I still see some peoples point.

Y'all think Gaga's pop music would be up an octogenarian's alley? :deadbanana:

Indeed, he clearly implied that he thinks her pop music is beneath her talent. And it is.

No it isn't. Gaga has made critically acclaimed pop masterpieces. Pop is not beneath her and there's no reason people should view pop in a negative fashion with the incredible work Gaga has done. There's bad jazz songs out there too, so should jazz also be beneath Gaga's talent? No.

I'm not saying pop is beneath her, I'm just saying the pop music she has made didn't showcase her talents, especially since her major strength (her vocals) has been watered down by her label against her wishes, as she herself claimed in 2014. If that isn't a red flag that she's better off ditching chart toppers I don't know what is.
