Back when the Born This Way album was released, the majority of fans and the general public took a disliking to the album and Gaga's new direction as a whole. There was a lot of negativity which really damaged the Born This Way era. Gaga herself addressed the negativity over the Born This Way era several times. Some say it even started when the Born This way single first dropped. Some say it was because of how different Born This Way was compared to her older work, however The Fame Monster is completely different from The Fame is every aspect so I don't believe that excuse.

I actually disliked Born This Way back in 2011 as well, but I now love it. I find the album to be her second best, just behind her 8 track EP The Fame Monster. It's definitely much better than The Fame and ARTPOP. I also really like most of the performances and music videos.

Why do you think the album was disliked back then, but is appreciated now?

I think they expected something different, and the "album of the decade" thing definitely didn't help it. It's a good thing it doesn't sound dated and people are actually starting to realize how good it is, including me.

Head Empty

- Born This Way was the first time Gaga started showing signs of slowing down commercially, which immediately caused people to play the "flop" card back then. Now we (or at least most of us) know better.

- The Madonna comparisons were at their peak, which caused a negative atmosphere.

- The album has a unique sound which a lot of people thought of as "noise". It's a grower for most people.

- Both sonically as well as lyrically, the album is very in-your-face so it scared a lot of people away :laughga:. Especially the religious lyrics were a big turn-off for some.

Well why did YOU dislike the album when it was first released?

I don't recall honestly. I was listening to other artists at the time mainly.

To me it was way worse than previous TFM because there are so many fillers on it. It disappointed me big time, also the change of direction from innovation and futurism to the recap from the 80s kinda destroyed my perspective on Gaga's creativity.

Pure Adrenaline

I liked it for about 2 days because of the long time without Gaga music and the hype that it surrounded the song after that I pretty much was indifferent to the song and right now the song gives me cringey feels

as the album as whole 5-7 songs are pure slayage apart from that fillers much and noise overall

would take another ARTPOP/TFM any day over BTW

I loved it and jammed to it but it was mostly the Madonna comparisons and the messiness of the releases etc.  also the dumb meanings she gave like being halfway between fantasy and reality.  Now I don't think of those things and see it just as music and it's amazing. Also since cheek to cheek I can really see who Gaga is. All her albums really are different and that was her plan all along. I see she's a musician

I don't think selling 1 million albums first week and 7 million copies after all was set and done is really disliking something.

Her metacritic score landed in the 70s even with that mess of a review from Tiny Mix tapes and other biased ones.

4 top 10 hits, 3 of them surpassing 2 million copies (same as TFM).

The BTW Ball final numbers were impressive, she almost gross the same as The Monster Ball with much less dates.

Maybe it felt that way because Gaga transformed herself into a much more polarizing persona than her previous eras (striking religious imagery, touching sensitive topics as gay rights), but it was well received as a whole if you think about it.

that is quite subjective, don't you think?
what tracks do you view as "fillers" on Born This Way?

I honestly loved it, and I still love it. However, I did dislike it from like mid 2012 till mid 2013 because I over played it. :toofunny:
