Over 1,000 killed by Pakistan heat wave

The worst heat wave in nearly 35 years has killed over 1,000 people in Pakistan's city of Karachi. 

The Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, while the army set up emergency treatment centers.

“There is no space left in the government hospitals to keep the dead bodies,” Anwaar Kazmi, a spokesman for rescue agency Edhi Foundation who runs the largest private ambulance service in Karachi, told Bloomberg on Wednesday.

The temperatures in Karachi reached 111 Fahrenheit (44 degrees Celsius) over the weekend — the highest since 1981. They dipped slightly to 100 F on Thursday, but there still hasn't been any significant rain fall.

The heat wave's effects have been amplified by the "severe" electricity cuts that have left "many without fans, water or light," Reuters reports.

Furthermore, as it is currently Ramadan, Muslims are not eating or drinking during daylight hours. In other words, many — especially those who work outside — are dehydrated during the day. 

"Some shops have refused to sell ice or water during the day, citing religious laws that mean they can be fined," Reuters notes.

"The situation, if uncontrolled, could lead to social unrest and pose a challenge," writes Bank of America's India Economist Abhishek Gupta. "This is likely to result in the postponement of reforms in the power sector."

I know it has been very hot. I live in Pakistan Karachi and it was unbearable. Without ACs there was no survival tbh. Plus electricity load shedding is also causing more problems :(

That's absolutely horrible.

I live in Arizona where it reaches those temperatures (and majority of the time even higher). I couldn't imagine being refused of water or ice and having no electricity.

They probably mean restaurants don't work during the day.

I'm sure you can buy from shop whatever you want. And those who don't fast can drink at home.

I know, but it doesn't mean that it's accurate.

People buy water/food for kids, pregnant women or sick/elderly who are not obligated to fast. It's not seller's business who you're buying it for.

Better to check with someone who lives there.

As a pakistani, I don't get why they won't sell water at least. If its really bad, youre allowed to break your fast.

I don't know but in my city at least shops are open. Theh sell water and anything from the store. People buy stuff to prepare to open their fasts in the evening. I'm sorry but that is a blatant lie. We aren't any backward country. Even in Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Hyderabad shops are open. Most people have died in my city Karachi. But I can gurantee you Shops are open. People are allowed to break their fast if circumstances don't allow but many don't break it themselves. And plus the electric load shedding problem is a factor too so..
