At least 140 people were arrested Saturday after violence broke out at an anti-immigration rally in Bratislava attended by thousands of people in protest at EU quotas on migrant numbers, local media said.

The rally, organised by an anti-Islam group called Stop the Islamisation of Europe, drew up to 8,000 people, according to Slovakian media. Police declined to give an estimate.

Protesters included Marian Kotleba, the governor of a central Slovakian region and founder of the far-right People's Party Our Slovakia.

"I wish you a nice, white day... we are here to save Slovakia," Kotleba told the crowd.

Scuffles erupted between small groups of demonstrators and police at the end of the rally, leading to 140 arrests, the country's TASR news agency reported, citing local police sources. Six police cars were damaged in the unrest.

Earlier, at least one protester was taken into custody after using tear gas against the police, and some in the crowd were seen shredding a blue EU flag offered by one of the speakers.

After the rally, a group of protesters attacked spectators at a cycling show, local media said, adding that unidentified attackers also threw bottles and stones at an Arab family at the main train station.

The protest was called after the European Commission said in May that Slovakia, an EU and NATO member of 5.4 million people, should accept 471 migrants from Italy and 314 from Greece, as the bloc scrambles to deal with a surge in people illegally crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life.

On Friday, Prime Minister Robert Fico and his counterparts from neighbouring Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland affirmed that their countries were against quotas on refugee numbers imposed by the EU.

A June poll by the Focus opinion research agency, published on Saturday, showed Slovaks perceived the current wave of migrants heading to Europe as the hottest international topic, being mentioned by almost 22 percent of 1,018 respondents.

"The vast majority of the Slovak public... perceives migrants as a security risk for the country, or as an economic or social burden," said Focus head Martin Slosiarik.

I'm for the rally, minus the racial remarks.

It's not the people, it's not the race. It's the religion.

Bad Bromance

Looks like Europe has their share of racial tensions that we are experiencing in the United States.  The world is currently upside down, if you ask me.   :smh:

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

Once the Arabs take over the West by immigration and overpopulation, just say goodbye to gay rights, Gaga music, western freedom, pop music & culture. Inviting more Arabs to western countries is increasing the chance of getting Sharia Laws. Just say no to Sharia Laws and extreme anti-gay religion like Islam which ISIS follow.

Majority of muslims in my country support gay rights.

Male muslims mostly listen to American rap (Kanye West, Drake) and female muslims mostly listen to hip hop and pop music (Beyonce, Rihanna, Ariana Grande).

Majority supports western freedom, that's why many of them stayed in West-Europe.

Maybe only salafists (extremely small minority) support Sharia laws.

And that all with in mind that the muslims who came to Europe 50 years ago are generally dumb, unskilled workers.

The immigrants who NOW come to Europe, are true entrepeneurs and risk-takers, who already had a good job in their country before the wars. You need a lot of money to come to Europe, and they have it. That means that we will probably actually benefit from these immigrants.

I think it's extremely sad how these neo-nazis and racists are not open to migrants. It's only 1000 people, c'mon. Even if all of them become jobless, that's maybe 5 milliom for all these people combined in welfare if they all fail to get a job. It's nothing.

There's probably more people protesting there than asylum seekers coming to Slovakia.

Is it me or are more central European countries (Austria, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia) the most racist and the most scared for immigrants?

No. no. no. Do not compare the current situation to the Nazi in the 1940. It's not the same.
