The men, identified in the media as Lahcen, 38, and Mohsine, 25, were convicted of an 'affront to public decency' and of an 'unnatural act with a person of the same s-x', and were also fined 500 dirhams (US$52), AFP quoted sources as saying. The pair was arrested on June 5 for kissing in front of Rabat's famous Hassan Tower to protest against the deportation of two French Femen activists who were arrested for kissing during protests earlier this in June. A photo showing two topless women kissing in Rabat was posted on June 2 to the Twitter account of FEMEN, a feminist protest group that organizes the topless protests. The women were protesting against Morocco’s laws which criminalize homos-xuality and the recent decision by a court in a northeastern town of Taourirt to jail three gay men. The women were sentenced to four months in prison on obscenity charges. Their sentences were reportedly suspended on appeal and they were sent back to their home country of France. According to Middle East Eye, 1,500 people protested against the feminist group outside the French embassy, but Lahcen and Mohsine who drew the most headlines after they appeared to kiss each other. Last week, a weekly magazine Maroc Hebdo was forced to withdraw its latest edition featuring a front cover headline asking: 'Should we burn gays?' The cover, which showed two young men at a swimming pool, smiling and gazing into each other's eyes, drew instant criticism when it was first circulated on social media. Some commentators called it 'homophobic' but the magazine defended it was saying that it was intended to provoke debate. It later said that it had withdrawn the edition from sale 'given the particularly strong reactions' it caused. The issue said 'homos-xuality is, of course, an individual right’ but added that debate on the topic had to take into account ‘moral and religious values'. Aswat, a local LGBT group, has meanwhile distanced itself from Femen saying its actions go 'against their vision of a peaceful struggle to promote the rights of s-xual minorities.' Aswat also criticized the Ministry of Interior for revealing the identities of two gay men who were arrested and convicted. In fact, the international press is talking more about it than our country does.This is so sad since Morocco is a muslim country, and the most important thing in islam is to respect other people's lives, ethnicities, feelings and thoughts as long as they don't do anything to you. Muslims around the world lack that part of the holy book, and favor things like praying and fasting. That's so sad. People hate what they don't understand.
