Michigan governor signs anti-LGBT adoption refusal law

Faith-based adoption agencies will be allowed to refuse to serve prospective parents, such as same-s-x or unmarried couples, if doing so would go against their religious beliefs in a package of bills that Michigan's governor signed Thursday.

Gov. Rick Snyder said the legislation codifies existing state practice for private agencies with contracts to place children and ensures as many organizations as possible are involved in helping kids be adopted.

The Republican-controlled state Senate sent the bill Wednesday to Snyder as the U.S. Supreme Court is on the verge of ruling later this month on whether same-s-x marriages should be legal nationwide.

The Senate version included a requirement that faith-based adoption agencies provide referrals to other agencies if they refuse service to prospective parents. So the bill went back to the state House where it received a quick concurrence vote, passing 65-44.

Snyder had been coy about whether he would support the bills. Earlier this year he said the adoption bills would need further review and that he's in favor of children being adopted by "loving families" and "loving parents." He didn't specify whether that included same-s-x couples.

So, he would rather children stay in foster homes and orphanages than stay with loving same-s-x couples. Okay then

Why couldn't I have been born in New York? :saladga:

I hate kids though, so I won't ever be adopting anyways.

Like, who cares if the child needs a home, happiness, and parents that actually want them and want to care for them? Because obviously the straight couple that put them up for adoption are still better people than any gay couple. Makes sense.

I simply don't understand these people's way of thinking :saladga: "My religion says that gays are ew so I'll just keep the children in a crowded orphanage and have the state pay for them instead of letting them be a part of a normal happy family" basically :messga: These people and their hypocrisy is making me want to vomit

I saw comment along these lines on an article about this a few days ago:

So since the religious conservatives have gotten their way in limiting LGBT couples' adoption rights, then what are they going to do to fix the problem? Are there going to be church-sponsored adoption drives? Will any of the people who rallied around this legislation offer to adopt those who need homes? Or will they demand their right to judge and then walk away without doing anything, as they always do?
