Germany has just taken a huge step to legalizing gay marriage

"The German coalition government is facing increasing pressure from within to grant same-s-x couples full marriage equality.

Earlier today (12 June) the Bundesrat, Germany’s Federal Assembly subordinate to the Bundestag (the parliament), urged the government to make necessary constitutional changes to open marriage to gay and lesbian couples.

In its resolution, titled ‘Marriage for everyone – resolution for full equality of same-s-x couples’, the assembly proposes changing the German Civil Code to include marriage equality; the proposed changes to the Civil Code would also grant same-s-x couples equal adoption rights.

‘Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come,’ said Malu Dreyer, minister president of Rhineland-Palatinate, in discussions today, before stating Ireland’s landslide referendum result had shown there was no reason not to grant full equality.

The assembly approved the resolution with 40 – 29 votes, due to the higher number of states governed by Labor / Greens or Labor / Left coalitions.

Although the German government is obliged to react to a resolution, it does not bind them.

A bill which would force Germany’s government, a coalition between Labor and the Conservatives, into a clear stance on the matter has been passed to state committees for discussion; the assembly is expected approve it with an equal majority if a ballot takes place.

The Federal Assembly, a proportional representation of the 16 federal states in the form of 69 representatives who have to be part of their state government, is an essential part of German legislature.

All legislative changes have to be approved by them before they reach the Bundestag; they also have to approve any constitutional change with a 2/3 majority, giving them the power of an absolute veto."

The gay debate is a huge discussion in Germany rn. In some states (for example Berlin) their government nearly failed because of this.

​Funny thing is that every party in the parliament is supportive of gay marriage except the conservative one  And the conservative one always blocking it.

I hate to be the party pooper but don't get your hopes up guys. The Bundesrat approved of the marriage equality bill which means that that bill will now be sent to the Bundestag, for the parliament to vote for or against. If they approve we have marriage equality. The thing is, while there'd be a majority in the Bundestag for that bill the social party (who advertised to voters that they'll bring '100% equality' if we voted for them 2 years ago) is afraid they might lose power if they voted for marriage equality cause atm they are collaborating with the Christian party (who's usually their arch enemy) to form Germany's government.  They rather please the Christian party than their voters. The Christian party will vite no, the opposition will vote yes, the votes of the social party will make or break this thing. They have several choices: Vote Yes for marriage equality which will upset the Christian party. Vote No which will be the ultimate betrayal for a party that acts like THE party for the lgbt community. [and yes, it's a common practice that parties force their parliament members to vote for what the leaders of the party want, yay democracy] OR (And I'm sure this is what will happen) what they'll do is in order to avoid having to vote  they'll probably just postpone the vote till what we call summer hole, a period where nothing important happens politically and where citizens usually don't really pay attention to this kind of stuff and forget about it. If they do that, the social party is dead not only to me, but to many lgbt members and their friends and families.

EDIT: what makes me angry is that the social party is constantly acting like the Christian party is the one to blame when it's completely in their own hands. But they are such cowards they won't admit that if they wanted we could easily have marriage equality, like nothing's stopping them. But lying into our faces that it's the CDU's fault is so disrespectful. Keep on relying on the Christian party and being their b---hes and maybe you'll end up where the fdp ended

Hope they manage to legalize it after all.

It's kind of weird to me, bc when I was in college every time they'd bring Germany up it was to talk about how advanced and progressive their legislation/jurisprudence/judicial system was...to see that they're still debating about something that so clearly deserves to be legalized is bit odd :P
