If she was a new act, an indie act, hadn't had a hit lead single, etc. these numbers would have been perfectly acceptable, even amazing. But not for someone like Katy. TD turned her into an A list pop star and her sales should match accordingly. She has just finished the most successful era of her career (TD + the re-release has sold just over 1 million in the UK to date and produced #2 singles and 5 top ten singles) and Roar, the lead single from Prism, went to #1 and was one of the biggest hits in the UK this year. Her debut sales should be MASSIVE. Gaga managed to pull in over 215,000 copies with BTW because she was enjoying the fruits of her last two album career highs. Why couldn't Katy do the same?

Here is a list of the first week sales of the biggest female releases in the UK market (their most recent album) from the last two years:

Lady Gaga - Born This Way - 215,639 (no #1 singles)

Adele - 21 - 208,000 (no #1 single at the time of release)

Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures - 194,966 (no #1 singles)

Rebecca Ferguson - Heaven - 128,458 (no #1 singles)

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die - 116,745 (no #1 singles)

Emeli Sande - Our Version Of Events - 113,319 (no #1 singles as a soloist)

Rihanna - Unapologetic - 99,000 (1 #1 single)

Florence + The Machine - Ceremonials - 94,050 (no #1 single at the time of release)

Beyonce - 4 - 89,211 (no #1 singles)

Pink - The Truth About Love - 80,000 (no #1 singles)

Taylor Swift - Red - 61,000 (no #1 singles)

Madonna - MDNA - 56,335 (no #1 singles)

Cher Lloyd - Sticks + Stones - 55,668 (1 #1 single)

Katy Perry - Prism - 53,827 (1 #1 single)

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - 47,000 (no #1 singles)

Rita Ora - Ora - 41,509 - (2 #1 singles and 1 featured #1 single)

Jessie J - Alive - 39,270 (no #1 singles)

Paloma Faith - Fall To Grace - 35,024 (no #1 singles)

Gabrielle Aplin - English Rain - 35,000 (1 #1 single)

Cheryl Cole - A Million Lights - 34,934 (1 #1 single)

As you can see, having #1 singles doesn't necessarily mean you'll have amazing album debut figures and it's lists like these that really separates which artists the public truly love and which ones they only think are worth spending 99p on an occasional single. Rihanna is the only one in the top ten who had a #1 single at the time of release. Only 6 artists in the entire list had a #1 at the time of release. The other 15 managed to acheive those brilliant numbers without that accolade, which proves that album sales matter a lot more in the long run. It's downright embarassing that Cher Lloyd, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Rebecca Ferguson managed higher first week tallies than Katy considering that they were not well liked (Cher), hadn't broken into the UK market until then (Taylor) were indie/non mainstream (Lana) and not promoted well enough (Rebecca). Oh, and none of them got #1 singles, yet they surpassed Katy. It's such an eye roll moment when charts experts blame the recession and the current music sales climate as justifications as to why albums by of-the-moment artists underperform instead of flat out admitting that they're singles artists or the public just aren't that into them. Regardless of the sales climate, history has shown that if the public consider music good enough, they will happily pay for it. There's just been no album that the UK public has been raving over this year, that's all.
