Americans born in Jerusalem can no longer state Israel as birthplace

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has struck down a disputed law that would have allowed Americans born in Jerusalem to list their birthplace as Israel on their U.S. passports. It's an important ruling that underscores the president's authority in foreign affairs.

The court ruled 6-3 Monday that Congress overstepped its bounds when it approved the law in 2002. It would have forced the State Department to alter its long-standing policy of not listing Israel as the birthplace for Jerusalem-born Americans.

The policy is part of the government's refusal to recognize any nation's sovereignty over Jerusalem, until Israelis and Palestinians resolve its status through negotiations.

The ruling ends a 12-year-old lawsuit by a Jerusalem-born American and his U.S. citizen parents.

Good message, but trivial. The U.S. still sends Israel more weapons than any other place in the world, so we don't need this to believe that they're neutral.

​Its relate to American internal policy and if it is in their policy to view the entirety of Jerusalem as neither Israeli or Palestine de facto territory at the minute then this ruling just reinforces that policy to be consistent.  

Obviously American policy is very divided in reality because they need to strike the balance of being both supportive of Israel and their undeniable right to security as well as championing or at least being supportive of the ultimate two state solution.

I feel bad for them, what will they do with their passports now since their birth place is not recognised.

​They all say "Jerusalem", half of Jerusalem-born Americans just have "Israel" placed next to it. I imagine passports will be renewed or the measure only counts for new ones.

Personally I'm also fine with "Palestinian Territories" as long as the status-quo continues but let's not get into it.
