Turtle species may go extinct if its aged last female can't breed

The Yangtze giant softshell turtle is the one of the latest, and scientists are going to desperate measures to help it reproduce. There is only one known female left in the world, and they recently artificially inseminated her.

But she's about 100 years old, and scientists are not sure she'll have children, the Wildlife Conservation Society said.

"The conservation world will once again be holding its collective breath until we know if this was successful," said zoo biologist Rick Hudson from Fort Worth, Texas. He joined a team of scientists who traveled to China to try to save the species, known scientifically as Rafetus swinhoei.

They've failed before.

The article even said its one of the latest.

So it means she is not the very last one one living.

Hope it won't extinct tho.

I don't really care that much about extinction when it's natural... If an animal species doesn't feel like reproducing, so be it. At least it wasn't humans who caused it.

Why?

Some animal species go extinct because they don't want to reproduce or they don't have enough food/too many enemies. Then you go extinct, and humans should neither help nor make the situation worse.

I imagine there can be very few cases where that lack of food and/or over abundance of predators is not due to human impact. Because there are very few places we've taken from with any sense of fairness to the ecosystem in place.
