Coop 15,354 Posted June 3, 2015 Share Posted June 3, 2015 True believers, consider this a gift from above: Disney is planning a reboot of Sister Act, calling the upcoming effort a “new take” on the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg hit comedy. The remake, first mentioned in the Hollywood Reporter, is currently in development and will be written by Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, whose female-skewing projects include Legally Blonde,She’s the Man, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Allie Shearmur, whose last Disney project was the live-action Cinderella reboot, will produce. News of the remake comes 23 years after the original, starring Goldberg as a lounge singer who disguises herself as a nun after her mobster beau (Harvey Keitel) commits a murder. The Disney comedy—which also starred Maggie Smith as Mother Superior, Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick, and Wendy Makkena as Sister Mary Robert—went on earn $232 million worldwide, and spawned both a 1993 sequel and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical that premiered in 2006. Disney is staying mum on plot details and casting, though there’s no harm in praying that some—if not all—of the original stars will return.
