All parties in the German parliament want gay marriage since like forever but as long as CDU is strong nothing will change. Same goes for Austria. Though this thread is talking about Australia, the posts are bound to lead back around to America, and if we want change, we vote in representatives and senators that can propose that change. As far as I know, constitutional requirements in Ireland meant that it was either a referendum on same s-x marriage or a referendum on removing the need for referendums for constitutional amendments (to allow those in power to do it directly), the latter would never have happened Every constitutional change from divorce to the removal of the territorial claim to Northern Ireland has happened through referenda.
