President Obama's new twitter gets flooded with racist responses

Six years into his Presidential term, Barack Obama has finally joined Twitter. According to a White House blog post, Obama’s new account, @POTUS, “will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him. President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them.”

The White House also posted video of the President sending his first tweet from the Oval Office:

"Watch President Obama send his first tweet from @POTUS. #FollowTheTweets https://t.co/N8JxY8kQIE

— The White House (@WhiteHouse) May 18, 2015"

Within minutes of the first tweet, Obama’s new account had broken 500,000 followers — though he only follows 65 people himself. The President quickly followed Columbia University, Harvard, John Kerry, Bill Clinton, various governmental agencies, and even George H.W. Bush. He also followed every Chicago sports team except the Cubs and the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

The President was inundated with “welcome” tweets from supporters. Some, including Bill Clinton, wondered if the new username stays with the office of President:

But conservatives across the country (and even the world) were sure to welcome him in their own fashion:

As always, we can count on the Right to treat our President as, in the words of Ted Nugent, a “subhuman mongrel.” The hatred spewed at this President easily outdoes that with which any other President has faced — including G.W. Bush, and he is a monster.

Hopefully, the President is successful in continuing to engage Twitter users. After all, social media is how information spreads, these days.

I thought he had been on twitter for ages. :toofloppy:

He was tweeting via the White House's staff twitter account. This one is the personal one.

what is wrong with people. It's easy to say that we have moved forward alot in terms of racism and equality, but have we really? Yeah, things may have decreased and we've had major improvements or whatever but still. I don't get WHY people feel the need to attack others on social media?? Especially the president????? I even saw someone make a racist tweet about Gaga's friend who was with her while she did her hair and was making a joke of it. They were like, "Asia looks different now". Maybe it's just me but im getting really tired of seeing stuff like this. All thats happened is that instead of attacking people in real life, people think they're heroes by attacking others behind a computer screen.

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me. Twitter is a haven for bigots and racists.

I would steer clear from making racial-driven comments to the president.  Watch your backs girlies.
